Faith-Based Movie THE HILL Lands Top Ten Spot at Box Office

By Movieguide® Contributor

Faith-based baseball movie THE HILL found an audience this week, bringing in $2.3 million and landing at number nine at this week’s box office.

THE HILL tells the incredible true story of Rickey Hill, a boy born with a degenerative spinal disease who dreams of playing professional baseball one day. Despite wearing leg braces throughout his childhood and being unable to run, Rickey develops his baseball skills by hitting small rocks with a stick for hours a day.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE HILL is a morally uplifting story about a real-life miracle. It champions Rickey’s courage, perseverance, faith, and forgiveness. Through forgiveness and humility, the Hill family learns to love one another and trust God’s plan above their own. The performances by Colin Ford and Dennis Quaid as Rickey and his father are captivating. Viewers will be invested in Rickey’s story from start to finish. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children due to brief foul, some smoking and two scenes of drunkenness in THE HILL.

The movie stars Colin Ford as Rickey and Dennis Quaid as Pastor Hill, Rickey’s father. Both actors were drawn to the movie because of its inspiring story and its exemplification of faith.

Movieguide® previously reported on Ford’s thoughts about the movie:

Ford, who plays the older version of Rickey in the movie, said that it was the true story of perseverance that first drew him to the role.

“THE HILL has been many years in the making for myself and [director] Jeff Celentano, he’s been a part of this for like 10 years and I’ve been a part of it for now since 2018, 2019,” Ford said.

“It’s just so exciting to finally see the finished product and then everyone’s reaction to the film as well,” he added. “I think the draw for me was the true story aspect. Just having been a baseball fan in my youth, the baseball element was very cool. But I think more than that was uh after discovering who Ricky was and the adversity that he faced and all the things that he struggled with; it was just a no-brainer for me…”

“Ricky took his greatest weakness and turned it into a strength,” Ford said. “Years and years of honing in on that hitting skill when he couldn’t run around the bases let alone walk, prepared him to be the hitter that he needed to be eventually at this fateful tryout against to become a professional baseball player.”

“I think that’s in scripture,” he continued, quoting 2 Corinthians 12:9: “God makes us strong through our weaknesses and I think that that’s exactly what God did through Rickey. I think his self-belief only propelled him forward even more and then later the support system that he received from his family, his brothers, sisters, grandmother and mom are just the catalyst that he needs in order to go off and shoot for the stars.”
