Fox has given the green light to THE FAITHFUL, a biblical series that focuses on five women from the book of Genesis.

“THE FAITHFUL follows The Old Testament’s heroic, Biblical matriarchs and opens a new lane of storytelling at Fox,” Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, said in a statement about the series.

He continued, “This show is the definition of strong, female character-driven storytelling, exploring timeless themes that originated thousands of years ago, yet remain startlingly modern and relatable.”

THE FAITHFUL tells the story of Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel and “is about discovering and losing love, the challenges of marriage, the joys and heartbreak of children, confronting temptation and finding faith,” per a press release from Fox.

Carol Mendelsohn serves as an executive producer, alongside Julie Weitz. Rene Echevarria wrote the pilot and will be THE FAITHFUL’s showrunner, as well as an executive producer.

“Carol, Julie and Rene bring unbelievable depth, dimension, intimacy and surprise to stories so many think they know but will completely rediscover through this powerful new lens,” Thorn concluded.

THE FAITHFUL is set to debut in the spring of 2026, with the six episodes airing over three weeks during Easter and Passover season.

Fox’s pick-up of THE FAITHFUL is part of a trend of Bible-based TV, from THE CHOSEN to Amazon Prime’s HOUSE OF DAVID. Last year, Netflix signed a deal to create faith-based content, including a modern day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz.

“This audience often is pigeonholed in a way that doesn’t really speak to their sort of entertainment,” Vernon Sanders, the co-head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, told the New York Times. “They love big action movies, they love rom-coms and they love inspiring stories.”

Diane Winston, a professor at the University of Southern California who studies religion in media, pointed out that producing religious content is a smart financial move for streamers today.

“Streaming services are companies that need to make money, and what drives them is getting more eyeballs,” she explained. “If they think faith-based content is going to get that for them, they will invest in it.”

It’s something Movieguide® has been saying for years in our annual Report to the Entertainment Industry.

The 2024 report reads, in part, “Movies that best reflect spiritually uplifting, redemptive, morally uplifting faith and values do much better at the box office and on home video than movies that don’t. Our Annual Report to Hollywood also shows once again, with relevant financial statistics, that people, including most moviegoers and television viewers, want Good to conquer evil, Truth to triumph over falsehood, Justice to prevail over injustice, and true Beauty to overcome vileness. They also want to take their whole family to the movies more often.”

THE FAITHFUL is another indicator that Hollywood studios have finally realized audiences want to see family-friendly content on their screens.
