Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing Used to Play Assassin Video Game

By Movieguide® Contributor

A former friend of Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing the United Healthcare CEO last week, revealed that he was part of a group that would play an assassin video game in college.

“I just found it extremely ironic that, you know, we were in this game and there could actually be a true killer among us,” the friend told NBC News. “As soon as his photo and name popped up on X, my friend texted me asking if I knew him, and then I was calling some 10 friends or they were calling me. I didn’t speak to anybody today who wasn’t already aware of what had happened.”

The video game that Mangione played in college is the wildly popular “Among Us,” a whodunnit game where one player is secretly a killer among the crowd. The game is popular among kids and teens who have been playing the game since it became popular in 2021.

While psychology experts recently concluded that violent video games do not cause violence in real life, parents should still be wary about allowing their kids to indulge in violent games. In Matthew 6:22-24, Jesus warns, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

While not all video games are harmful to play, parents should also encourage their kids to get off their screens and engage with the real world so they don’t become desensitized to the impact their actions have on others’ lives.

Online safety experts also advise parents to steer their kids away from violent video games as the community of these games is often toxic, if not infiltrated by bad actors hoping to take advantage of kids.
