Josh Gad gave fans an update on the upcoming HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS reboot from Disney.
“A lot of u ask me what’s going on with this film,” Gad tweeted. “Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us.”
The actor then told fans that, if they really wanted to see the reboot on screen, they should reach out to Disney and tell them how interested they are in the project. Gad also shared an unofficial poster for the project.
The reboot, titled SHRUNK, would have been another installment in the original franchise — 1989’s HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS, 1992’s HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID, and 1997’s HONEY, WE SHRUNK OURSELVES.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, SHRUNK was set to follow Nick Szalinski (Gad), the son of the original movie’s scientist dad (Rick Moranis). Joe Johnston, the director of the first movie, was set to return, with David Hoberman producing and Todd Rosenberg penning the script.
Fans were excited for the reboot, especially because it would mark the first movie role for Moranis in over 25 years.
People magazine reported that the actor left public life after his wife passed away in 1991, wanting to focus on being a single father to their children.
“I was working with really interesting people, wonderful people,” he said. “I went from that to being at home with a couple of little kids, which is a very different lifestyle. But it was important to me. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. My life is wonderful.”
Movieguide® previously reported on the reboot and Moranis’ return:
Rick Moranis will return to the HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS franchise with a new movie called SHRUNK.
Moranis will star in the new film alongside Josh Gad (FROZEN), who will play the son of Moranis’ scientist character “Wayne Szalinski.”
Following in his father’s footsteps, Gad’s character will become a scientist himself and accidentally shrink the kids.
Movieguide® has enjoyed the HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS franchise as it promotes family-friendly content and is suitable for kids. Moreover, it encourages the responsibility that parents must take on and the role that they play in their kids lives. Movieguide® recently reported that there would be a new sequel, however it had not yet been confirmed whether or not Moranis would return to the franchise.
