How Former NFL Safety Jordan Richards Found Freedom in Christ

Former NFL safety Jordan Richards shares how struggles in college led him to Christ.
Until his freshman year of college, success had always come easy to Richards, whether it be good grades or playing well on the football field. Things changed during his freshman year at Stanford when he started to face adversity for the first time in his life. He had put his identity in his success, and as Richards started to struggle, he began to question who he was.
“I felt inadequate and unprepared to and unable to cope with the demands of my new world in college,” Richards said.
Some teammates who noticed that Richards was struggling invited him to a student-led bible study. Afterward, they connected him with a guy on campus who had mentored student-athletes in the past.
“We met once a week for an hour for my entire Stanford career and after meeting for weeks, my mentor finally asked me, ‘Jordan do you want to know Jesus personally? Do you want a relationship with Him?’ And it was at that point I had decided that I did. I just said that Jesus, I wanna know you. I want to walk with you. I want to be by your side,” Richards recalled.
After making that decision, it was relief to walk through failure. It was relief to press into fear. To know that I had his heart unconditionally was the most freeing thing ever.”
Richards’ testimony is an example of the amazing way that the Lord uses difficulties in our lives to bring us to Him. It is often in our lowest moments that we see God most clearly, and cling to Him the hardest.
