Jason Momoa confirmed he will return for the third installment of DUNE in a conversation with TODAY.

“I’m making a comeback,” the actor said in an interview Craig Melvin. “You heard it first, right here with you, baby.”

Momoa joked, not knowing if he was supposed to share the information: “You’re going to get me in trouble.”

Jason Momoa, who plays Duncan Idaho, starred in the 2021 film DUNE. His character was the mentor and friend of Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Artreides. His character dies in that movie, sacrificing himself to save Paul and his mother, but returns as a clone in Frank Herbert’s books.

Movieguide® praised the most recent DUNE movie’s “Strong moral, patriotic worldview.” The review reads:

DUNE:  PART TWO tells the second half of science fiction writer Frank Herbert’s epic tale of political power, love and desert heroism. After his father was murdered by the evil Baron Harkonnen’s men, Paul and his mother learn the ways of the Fremen the indigenous people on the desert planet of Arrakis. Paul falls in love with a young Fremen women, Chani. Paul helps the Fremen fight for freedom against the Baron. However, he sees a terrible future of a galactic holy war, but can he prevent it while seeking justice for his father?

Movieguide® noted that the film is “visually stunning” and “is also a story about good and evil, political power, religion, justice, revenge, and the consequences of wielding power on a worldwide, galactic scale.”

The third DUNE film, which is set to release in 2026, is called DUNE: MESSIAH.

The Wrap shared that the film takes place 12 years after DUNE. It picks up after Paul Atreides marries the Emperor’s daughter and accepts his role as “Messiah.”

“A ‘jihad’ has been ongoing as the Fremen lay waste to non-believers outside Arrakis in Paul’s name,” the outlet said.  Paul hopes to create a better future, but not having an heir puts him in danger.

Director Denis Villeneuve previously said that the third DUNE film will not be a completion of a trilogy but rather it’s own movie.

“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” he said in regard to the first two films. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”
