Kim Walker-Smith Has One Goal for New Worship Album: ‘Serve’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Kim Walker-Smith just released Trample, her first album in three years, with songs that explore her faith and her roles as a wife and mother.
“I see myself, first and foremost, as a worship leader, not an artist, and so in that mindset, my job is to serve the body of Christ. So, I feel like I want to have something to give,” she told The Christian Beat as an explanation for the long break between Trample and her previous album.
Walker-Smith continued, “I think the songs are special, and God has a plan for the songs, even more than what we creatives might have planned in our minds.”
The singer also talked about the fact that two of the songs on Trample aren’t worship songs.
“I know that everything I’m stepping into is new and different for me, and I want people to kind of come along with me in this and understand where I’m coming from,” Walker-Smith said, referring to the songs “Mama” and “Chasing Sunlight.”
“Mama” details her views on motherhood, while “Chasing Sunlight” is about her relationship with her husband.
“Both of those are the most important, sacred roles I have: being a mother and being a wife,” Walker-Smith explained. “They’re far more important and more sacred than who I am as a worship leader or songwriter.”
Movieguide® previously reported on “Mama”:
Grammy award-nominated artist Kim Walker-Smith just released a song that she hopes will be an anthem for all moms.
“I hope it encourages mamas everywhere, emboldens them, and fuels their fire in fighting for their children and to be bold in parenting,” she said of the song titled “MAMA.”
The song reminds mothers of the important, God-given role they play in their children’s lives.
“I homeschool my kids and most of the work I do is within churches so I’m not attending school board or PTA meetings, but I’m not oblivious to the war that has been declared on our children,” Walker-Smith told The Christian Beat. “As a mother of three young children, I cannot let my guard down for one second. This stirs a righteous anger in me. I want to use my talents to help in this battle. While praying and talking to God about it, I felt God drop this song in my heart. The words and melody just came to me. I got with some other songwriting parents who helped me finish this song.”
Speaking about the importance of digging deep and being transparent while creating, Walker-Smith said, “As a worship leader onstage, the more real and vulnerable and authentic I am, it invites people into that as well…so I think that translates into the songwriting — the more vulnerable and honest I can be…it invites [listeners] into that same honesty and vulnerability.”
Walker-Smith spoke further about Trample to CCM, calling it “a compilation of songs written from a place of victory” after struggles with difficult seasons.
“My hope and my prayer with Trample, is that these words and melodies will prophetically awaken the resolve and determination inside of the listener, to stand in victory through Jesus,” she continued. “I pray the honesty of the lyrics brings repentance where it’s needed and straightening to crooked paths. And lastly, I hope this album makes clear where I’m headed and I hope others will join me; worship belongs to Jesus and all the glory is His alone.”
Walker-Smith went into more detail about the album’s title track, “Trample,” in an Instagram post.
“I think sometimes in the mundane and routine of a Sunday morning, we forget that the powerful Spirit of God that conquered death and the grave, is the same Spirit alive in us,” she wrote. “He doesn’t want to be contained to our boxes.”
