OCTONAUTS Season 1: Moral and Educational for Young Viewers
By Movieguide® Contributor
OCTONUATS Season 1 tells the nautical adventures of an animal crew whose mission is to protect the ocean and its inhabitants. The animated series is produced by Silvergate Media, the same company that created the popular Netflix series HILDA. The children’s show is currently streaming on Netflix.
The octonaut crew comprises Captain Barnacles, Peso, Kwazii, Shellington, Dashi, Tweak and Professor Inkling. Each of the octonauts has their own responsibilities and skills. Peso is a medic, Kwazii is a lieutenant and former pirate, Shellington is a biologist, Dashi is a photographer and Tweak is a mechanic. They travel the ocean in their octopus-shaped submarine, and when traveling separately, they get about in their fish-shaped mini-subs. Whether an injured whale or a reef needs coral transplants, the octonauts are there to lend some paws.
Kwazii is a little brash and has a big imagination—he’s always looking for adventure. Peso can be a little timid, but he musters up courage when an animal needs his help. Captain Barnacles always shows a brave face and knows what to do. The rest of the crew are gentle-mannered and eager to help. Each episode has a mission or two; there’s always something new for the octonauts to discover.
OCTONAUTS Season 1 displays a moral worldview. The octonauts demonstrate nothing but compassion for marine life inhabitants. They work together to get things done and encourage each other when anyone needs it. The characters also exhibit good sportsmanship and befriend their enemies.
The show does have some very light peril. A submarine gets stuck and crashes, and a character occasionally gets in a tight spot.
Each character has a unique voice that matches their character, drawing young viewers in. The animation style is very engaging, and the characters are cute with lots of round features. The marine life the octonauts come across is created to look much cuter than their real-world counterparts. But at the end of each episode, a clip shows what the animal looks like in real life.
OCTONAUTS Season 1 strives to educate kids about the ocean and why it’s important to keep it habitable for marine life. The show displays a moral/Biblical worldview with no questionable elements whatsoever.
