Olivia Newton-John Recalls Promise to Say Lord’s Prayer Every Night: ‘And So I Have’

By Movieguide® Contributor

People around the world are mourning the loss of Olivia Newton-John, and remembering her legacy as a performer, a humanitarian, and a Christian.

In one of the last interviews she did before her death, Newton-John revealed a special prayer she made while pregnant with her daughter in 1986.

“I remember when I was pregnant with Chloe, and I was close to losing her. I went to bed and asked God to save her, and if he did, I would say the Lord’s Prayer every night for the rest of my life, and so I have,” Newton-John said

The Movieguide® Awards performer also discussed her faith, as well as coming to terms with her own death.

“I have quite a few times that it was a possibility sooner than I wanted it,” Newton-John explained. “We all know we are going to die. … I think we spend our lives denying it. It’s extremely personal. I find it hard to put into words. I feel we are all part of one thing. I have had experiences with spirits or spirit life and felt the spirit world and have heard things that I believe there is something that happens.”

Newton-John also spoke of her belief in life after death.

“I think there is a great knowingness out there we become part of it. I hope that the energies of the people you love will be there. … I think all the love will be there. … I’m sort of looking forward to that, not now, but when it happens.”

Movieguide® previously reported on her death:

Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, best known for her role in 1978’s GREASE, died on August 8, 2022. She was 73.

Olivia’s husband, John Easterling, confirmed the news on her official Facebook page.

“Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time,” he wrote.

Although a cause of death was not listed, Newton-John battled breast cancer three times, with the latest diagnosis coming in 2017.

“Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer,” her husband added.

Newton-John previously attended the Movieguide® Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry where she performed with her band, Liv On.

Despite some edgier songs early in Newton-John’s career like her 1981 hit “Physical,” the four time Grammy-winning artist also sang songs motivated by her Christian faith, including many Christmas albums and a 2006 album called “Grace and Gratitude.”

Music historian Joel Whitburn ranked Newton-John as the No. 1 female soloist of the ’70s. Newton-John’s legacy in the entertainment world continued through subsequent decades after her success in GREASE.

Newton-John’s GREASE co-star John Travolta also wrote a tribute which he posted to his Instagram: “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”

Please pray for her family at this time.
