Popular Disney Show Features Network’s First Bisexual Main Character

Disney Channel featured its first openly bisexual main character in its show THE OWL HOUSE, and the decision is going to alienate many of its Christian viewers.

The show follows the adventures of a 14-year-old Dominican-American witch-in-training named Luz Noceda. Luz has shown romantic affection for male characters in previous episodes. But in two recent episodes, she began exploring romantic possibilities with a female character named Amity Blight.

OWL HOUSE creator Dana Terrace says the character’s sexuality reflects her own bisexual identity, according to the Christian Post.

Her goal has always been to include queer kids in her shows, she adds, although previous Disney leadership did not allow it.

“I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard,” she says. “I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could not represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the channel. … Luckily my stubbornness paid off, and now I am very supported by current Disney leadership.”

While mainstream culture praises Terrace for making the show’s main character bisexual, the decision presents concerns for Christian parents. Movieguide® previously reported that Christian viewers have already voiced concerns over the show’s main premise of witchcraft.

While this is the network’s first LGBTQ main character, it’s not the first time Disney has included homosexual minor characters in its productions.

Disney-Pixar’s recent film ONWARD has a minor character who is an openly homosexual female police officer. “Officer Specter” briefly refers to her girlfriend’s daughter in one scene.

In 2019, Disney Channel’s ANDI MACK showed the network’s first teenage homosexual couple.

And earlier this year, Disney released a short animated film called OUT, which features a man struggling to tell his parents that he’s homosexual and has a boyfriend.
