Racing Driver Finds Purpose in Faith: ‘My Foundation’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Racing driver Sting Ray Robb loves to drive, but even more than that, he loves the Lord.
“My faith and racing have grown together a lot,” he said on an episode of the “Jesus Calling” podcast. “It kind of seems that how I was challenged in the racing world, I was also challenged in my faith. I said a long time ago that I would not be a racer if it wasn’t for my faith. It’s my foundation that I lean on, and it’s the thing that I call to and find purpose in.”
Born and raised in Idaho, Robb’s parents instilled a love of racing in him at a young age.
“They were actually Corvette fans, and that’s where I got the name Sting Ray from,” he explained. “And so that’s kind of what inspired me at an early age. I grew up going to Corvette Club meetings, autocross events, drag races…I actually took my first steps at a Corvette Club meeting, which is kind of funny, but it kind of tells a story about how I got my passion.”
He got involved in go-cart racing as a child and has been competing ever since.
“And so I was very, very dedicated as a young kid. We were on the road forty-two weekends a year, as a ten or twelve-year-old, just for the sake of go-kart racing. And so getting those championships, being ranked number one, it wasn’t necessarily unexpected. I think that we worked our tail ends off to get to that point,” Robb recalled.
His whole family was involved in the crew to keep the competitions running and supported him throughout his early career.
In 2016, Robb began doing open wheel, which he decided would be his long-term career.
“Open wheel was what I settled on because it was the most similar to go-karts. It had the high grip, but also good horsepower. And I liked the idea of being able to race an IndyCar on multiple styles of track, so roads and ovals,” he explained.
No matter what he does, though, Robb keeps his faith at the forefront.

“I’ve always said John 3:30 is my Bible verse that I wear on my suit, my helmet, whatever,” Robb said at Faith Night at Victory Field in August. “That is ‘He must increase but I must decrease.’ So, I’m hoping this continues that I get opportunities more and more like this because I don’t want it for my glory. I want it for God’s glory. I want to point people in that direction, and if that’s all my platform does, I’ll be happy with it.”
He’s active on social media, too, talking about his faith and racing.
“It’s easy to pray during difficult times, but it’s especially important to praise God in times of happiness,” Robb reminded his fans in an October Instagram post.
