Moses actor Wasim No’mani discussed his new show THE PROMISED LAND and explained how the humor of the project reveals a new side of Moses.

“We have this idea of, you know, this statuesque, you know, leader, this prophet, one of the three in the Abrahamic traditions, but you go back and you start reading Exodus and everything, and Moses believes in God. Moses believes God is talking to him. He believes God is choosing him, but he rejects the call. He refuses, comes up with excuses,” No’mani told Movieguide®. “And I think in those instances you find his humanity. And in the humanity, we can find the comedy.”

“I think is that is where a lot of the funny stuff comes out,” he continued. “And I think it’s relatable because, I mean, I think we all have some level of imposter syndrome, like, can I really do this? And you don’t know if you don’t go, and you’ve gotta start acting, you know, while you’re not confident, while you don’t believe in yourself, while all these things are going on.”

Through the comedy of the show, THE PROMISED LAND promises to reveal a new side of the story of Exodus to viewers.

“THE PROMISED LAND is a comedy TV series that offers the story of Exodus through a new lens: mockumentary,” a description of the show reads on its website. “In the style of THE OFFICE and ABBOTT ELEMENTARY, we’ll give you the inside take on how Moses and his family really feel about their journey through the desert.”

While many who worked on the show were hesitant at first – not wanting to mock God and His word – they came to realize that the humor largely comes from irony that is already present in the story, rather than mocking character’s actions.

“I was looking at it, and I was like, you know, the story of Moses has a lot of irony, and irony, a lot of times, is the basis for humor. I rediscovered the story in Exodus 18, where Jethro comes to Moses and basically says, you’re doing this all wrong. I was like, man, a father-in-law coming in to visit — this could be pretty funny,” explained creator Mitch Hudson. “We can relate to a father-in-law who’s got different ideas of how to run things. So I wrote a pilot and a plan for a whole series.”

While the pilot of the series has been available for a while, the full first season of the show will begin to air starting Oct. 1 on the show’s YouTube channel.
