On June 29, Charles Barkley delivered news to Ernie Johnson; that Ernie would be inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

NBA on TNT shared a video on Twitter and wrote, “Chuck surprised Ernie with the news that he will be inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame ?.”

Johnson was completely beside himself in disbelief. He stated, “Whoever votes on that, I am deeply humbled beyond belief. Thank you so much. It means the world to me. I’ve been at this for 34 years, I’m stunned. Thank you so much.”

On the “Dan Le Batard Show” Johnson shared one interaction that has stuck out to him in his career. It was on his days of local television when Johnson chewed out one of the producers who told him that his segment would be much shorter than he anticipated because she had mistimed the show.

Years later, Johnson reconnected with her to apologize. She told him she forgave him right away because that is what her faith has called her to do. Ultimately, forgiveness changed his perspective on what truly matters in life.

A post on Twitter from the Dan Le Batard Show stated, “The job is what I do, it’s not who I am…it took me a while to learn that…that was the defining moment that said, ‘get over yourself.’ @TurnerSportsEJ shares a story of forgiveness that changed his perspective on ‘the big picture’ and the importance of humanity.”

For Johnson, much of his story stems from his faith.

In 2017 Johnson shared on the Sports Spectrum Podcast why he started attending church.

“I just started taking a much broader look at my life, and I was having an identity crisis,” he said. “I was identified by what I did. That was who I was at that time — I was a sportscaster. I might want to tell folks I’m a husband and father first and a sportscaster later, but my life wasn’t reflecting that.”

Now, his goal in life is to serve anyone who comes across his path.

Sports Spectrum reported Johnson said, “The Son of Man came to serve and not be served,” he said, referencing Mark 10:45. “And that’s what I always try to remember. It’s not, ‘What are you going to do for me today but what can I do for you?’”

“I don’t think you can force it, but I think you have to be aware of circumstances in your daily life where you allow that light of Christ to shine,” he concluded. “You have to be intentional about it when the situation arises. … I’m just trying to model what it means to be a follower of Christ.”
