Zach and Tori Roloff Reflect On His Near-Death Experience Last Year

By Movieguide® Contributor

Last year, Zach Roloff, from LITTLE PEOPLE, BIG WORLD, went into the hospital last year to have a shunt put in so that fluid in his brain could drain to his stomach.

However, that shunt began to fail and Zach was immediately moved to the ICU.

“It’s been a year since Zach almost died,” Tori, Zach’s wife, shared on their podcast, “Raising Heights.”

“I get woken up that morning at 2 a.m., 4 a.m. and this nurse goes, ‘Your husband’s getting moved to ICU.’ I fled in a panic to ICU,” she added.

Tori explained to Zach that “when I got to you — Zach was there yelling my name. And so I’m like ‘Oh my gosh he’s dying like this is it.’”

When Tori got to her husband the doctors were “manually draining the fluid” in Zach’s brain.

PEOPLE reported, “When there is a shunt blockage, extra fluid can build up in the brain causing pressure on the brain, which could lead to brain damage, according to the National Institute of Health.”

From then, Zach need to have surgery as soon as possible to fix the problem.

However, the doctor had to do “exploratory surgery” because they weren’t sure what they were “going to find” in his brain.

At the time of the surgery, “there were a lot of unknowns,” Tori said.

Once inside surgery, the doctors were able to determine the problem and replace the shunt in Zach’s brain.

What started all this for Zach was years of migraines. After countless tests and doctors, Zach is relieved to finally found the cure.

“We’re up on a year on that and I haven’t had a migraine since then,” he said.

Tori shared a snippet of their podcast that explained part of Zach’s journey on her social media.

She captioned the video, “Last year was so scary, but also a blessing in disguise. Check the links in our bio to hear how we finally figured out what’s been causing Zach so much pain for the last 10 years!”

Movieguide® previously reported on Zach’s surgery:

“He is home!!!” Tori wrote on Instagram.

The couple shares three children, son Josiah Luke, 9 months, Lilah Ray, 3, and Jackson Kyle, 5.

“Thank you Jesus! And thank you to everyone who prayed for us, and offered to bring us food and supported us through this whole experience!” she added. “Thank you endlessly to the staff at OHSU for helping @zroloff07 through his entire experience. They were exceptional and we are so grateful to them!”
