What You Need To Know:
IT FOLLOWS succeeds in its mission of delivering lots of scares, based on a cinematic aesthetic rooted in 1970s and 80s horror movies. The movie also contains some effective action shots. However, it has a very strong, abhorrent occult worldview. The characters engage in illicit sexual activity for the purpose of transmitting an evil curse. Thus, they engage in fornication to invoke the occult, not only to satisfy their own lustful desires but also to selfishly purge themselves of an evil paranormal force. IT FOLLOWS is an evil, immoral occult movie that media-wise viewers should avoid.
(OOO, AbAbAb, LL, VV, SSS, NNN, D, MM) Very strong occult, anti-biblical worldview, with a promotion of sexual immorality for the purpose of transmitting a sinister curse; 18 obscenities (mostly “f” and “s” words); strong violence includes a few scenes of zombie-like characters physically assaulting the protagonist and a naked zombie-like character physically assaults another character in order to sexually assault him and kill him; graphic promiscuity and fornication, with three different scenes showing the protagonist engaging in sexual intercourse with different three young men and scene depicting sex between a young man and an older, zombie-like character that results in his death; graphic nudity, including upper female nudity and full and partial male nudity; no alcohol use or drunkenness; girl smokes; and, strong miscellaneous immorality includes moral relativism and selfishness, with characters selfishly participating in sexual lust in order to pass along an evil curse to other people, out of selfish reasons.
IT FOLLOWS tells the story of Jay, a 19-year-old college freshman, who should be enjoying her school and weekends out at the lake. After a seemingly innocent sexual encounter with a young man whom she thought she knew, she finds herself haunted by strange visions and has the inescapable sense that someone, or some “thing,” is following her. Faced with this threat, Jay, her teenage friends and her sister must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind them. Jay soon discovers that her best option to get rid of this malevolent curse is to sexually transmit it to another person.
IT FOLLOWS succeeds in its mission of delivering lots of scares, based on a cinematic aesthetic that seems rooted in 1970s and 80s horror movies. Thus, when a door suddenly slams, it scares the viewer because of the suspense that’s been built up by the story, the camera and the editing. The movie also contains some nice action shots, especially from the perspective of a moving object. For example, a zombie-like character is chasing the protagonist, and she jumps in a vehicle, so the camera is inside the car looking out from the back window pulling away from and leaving this character in the distance.
That said, the movie has a very strong, abhorrent occult worldview. The characters engage in illicit sexual activity for the purpose of transmitting an evil curse. Thus, they engage in fornication to invoke the occult, as a means to an end, not only to satisfy their own lustful desires but also to selfishly purge themselves of an evil paranormal force.
The Bible not only condemns occult activity, it also condemns sexual lust and all sex outside of heterosexual marriage. As 1 Corinthians 1:7 says, “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral sins against his own body.” Paul continues this theme by adding, “But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.”
In sum, IT FOLLOWS is a 1980s style horror movie that’s rooted in an occult, anti-biblical worldview, with a distorted, abhorrent and immoral view of sexuality and occult activity. IT FOLLOWS is thoroughly unacceptable viewing.
