(C, O) A loving portrait of an African-American-Gullah family showing the tension between generations and spiritism vis-a-vis Christianity .

More Detail:

In LADYBUGS, Rodney Dangerfield plays real estate broker Chester Lee, who agrees to coach an all-girl soccer team in hopes of getting a raise. With help from his assistant coach, Julie Benson, Chester begins the season. They discover the team is worse than the Bad News Bears, with only one experienced soccer player. Adding to this dilemma is the boss’ daughter–the worst player. To compensate, Chester recruits a star athlete, Matthew, who poses as a girl to fool their opponents. They must keep Matthew’s identity a secret long enough to win the city championship and to ensure Chester’s job promotion. For some reason, Chester asks God to help his team win and vows to live a decent life if his prayer is answered. When the situation appears to improve, he retorts: “I take it back, I may not need you after all.”

Overall, LADYBUGS looks like THE BAD NEWS BEARS meets TOOTSIE. The movie wallows in predictability, objectionable language and sexual puns. Jokes about everything from genitalia to sexual activity are thrown in, which seems to be vintage Dangerfield. If anything, he is true to his trademark one-liner: “I don’t get no respect!” He certainly doesn’t deserve any.
