DR. WAI AND THE “SCRIPTURE WITH NO WORDS”

What You Need To Know:

DR. WAI AND THE “SCRIPTURE WITH NO WORDS” is a martial arts fantasy that’s touring the United States with the current Hong Kong Film Festival. Made in 1996, the movie stars Jet Li of ROMEO MUST DIE and LETHAL WEAPON IV as a writer with marital problems. He and his colleagues start writing about the problems between him and his wife in an action adventure story, set during World War II, about an Indiana Jones-type adventurer who is looking for the mysterious “scripture with no words.” The scripture supposedly can tell the future. Writing himself and his wife into the story helps the writer solve his marital woes.

This movie is an inconsequential martial arts movie from Hong Kong, even though there are some clever ideas in the story. For instance, the writer’s alter ego in the story uses pens as a weapon to trip and tie up his opponents. Also, the idea that art may be able to help us overcome obstacles in life can be a profound notion. The rest of the movie, however, is confusing and strangely uninvolving. It also includes plenty of obscenities and some pagan and occult elements
