SMALL SOLDIERS

"The Future of Violent Toys"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

SMALL SOLDIERS is a dark, violent and sometimes funny movie delivering lots of action and scares revolving around the possible future of violent toys. The movie starts with two toy designers creating action figures which play back with their owners. Munitions microprocessing chips from the defense department are installed into the toys. The result is the Commando Elite, rough-neck, unrelenting fighters led by Chip Hazard, and a peaceful, grotesque monsters called the Gorgonites, led by Archer. Toy store keeper, teenager Alan and his neighbor Christy keep a haven for the Gorgonites, and the Commando Elite perform an all out assault on their home and families.

Though the action involves toys and shows no bloodletting, SMALL SOLDIERS employs some of the same tactics found in the most horrible war films including many obscenities. The toys are unrelenting, fearsome and sadistic. They cause great harm to Abernathy and Fimple families. The special effects are admirable, but it seems that every summer, the writing of summer action movies gets more and more clichéd and dumb. While having some moral elements of trust and protecting family, the movie seems to gloss over violence in the media and violence with toys and games.

Content:

(Pa, B, LL, VVV, A, D) Pagan worldview of combative toys with some moral elements of confessing wrongdoing, preserving family, trust, & familial love; 13 obscenities (mostly mild), 3 profanities (mild) & numerous vulgarities & name-calling; heavy & sometimes scary action violence including toy cuts boy, toy ties up girl, toys knock out parents with sleeping pills, toys attack home with an all out assault, toys burn boys pant leg, & girl mows toys down with mower, toys become electrocuted, some war violence on television, & humans fight back; no sex; no nudity; brief alcohol use by parents; no smoking; and, miscellaneous immorality including stealing, former rebellious behaviors implied, & some eerie images of mutant female dolls.
