What You Need To Know:
The real reason someone might wish to see the movie is the astoundingly athletic dance routines, unfortunately this form of dancing looks like a cross between gymnastics, having sex and making war. To its credit STEP UP ALL IN has less foul language than you’d expect. There is no actual sex or actual violence and the hoky story line does resolve with forgiveness, unselfishness and fidelity. Movieguide® recommends extreme caution largely on the basis of the crass nature of the dancing. While there are moments reminicent of Olympic gymnastics there are too many reminicent of a strip club.
Content:
(Pa, B, L, N, A, M) ; generally pagan worldview with dancers seeking fame and fortune resolving to a moral message of forgiveness and friendship; six obscenities simulated urination on other people, obscene dance moves; no actual violence but some dance competitions look like gang battles; no sex; upper male nudity; some alcohol use in a bar, but no apparant drunkenness; a fixed dance competition.
More Detail:
STEP UP ALL IN is a vulgar dance marathon intermitanly interrupted by a weak story. With little foul language, no sex and no actual violence its major drawback is simply the way astounding athletic ability is choreographed in such a crass form of dancing.
The “story” begins with Sean and his dance troup The Mob being rejected at an audition in Los Angeles. That evening The Mob gets into an impromptu dance battle with Grin Knights at a bar. The Grim Knights puts The Mob to shame. Sean wants to continue seeking fame and fortune dancing, but his troup abandons him and returns to Miami. Sean learns of a big dance competition in Las Vegas that promises a three year Vegas show contract to the winner. He puts together another troup of dancers to compete. Of course, he must then compete against his old crew The Mob and the sinister Grim Knights. A love interest and some other minor side stories are thrown in fill a few minutes between lengthy dance numbers.
The real reason someone might wish to see the movie is the astoundingly athletic dance routines, unfortunately this form of dancing looks like a cross between gymnastics, having sex and making war. Unlike the majesty of ballet or the grace of a waltz, this kind of dancing is litterally conducted like a boxing match. One scene has opposing dance troups sparring in a boxing ring. Sean’s new group simulates urinating on his old group The Mob. Crotch grabbing and sexual thrusts are a part of almost every dance troup’s routine.
All sorts of movies take liberty with reality but it is a joke when two dance troups join together one evening and then next day put on a coordinated choreographed 20 minute dance with matching costumes and perfect staging. One can only imagine how long it actually took to create, learn and practice such a complicated routine.
