Released very briefly in only two cities in 2002, THE 4TH TENOR, starring standup comic Rodney Dangerfield, has just been released on video. Rodney stars as Lupo, a restaurant owner who falls in love with Gina, a rude woman who sings Italian opera for his customers. When Gina, who clearly doesn’t love him back, tells Lupo that she can only fall in love with another singer, Lupo travels to Italy to study singing with Vincenzo. Unfortunately, Vincenzo is a con man more interested in Lupo’s dough than his do-re-mi. After running away from a mob of opera fans enraged by his terrible singing, Lupo meets a friendly Italian family with a secret for making even the worst singer sound like Pavaroti.
Although photographed beautifully with some nice outdoor locations, THE 4TH TENOR suffers from a silly script and uninspired, broad performances. Rodney Dangerfield is not as manically funny as he can be when he’s on his game, but this is a more family oriented movie than he usually makes, although there is still some light sexual innuendo in the movie, which includes five obscenities. Also, alcohol plays a major role in the story.
