Working toward a goal while trusting God for the outcome is the premise realized in WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS. Based on the novel by Wilson Rawls, the movie opens with the fond recollection of an old man, who as a young boy wanted Redbone Hound puppies. In Ozark, Oklahoma, during the 1930’s, 9-year-old Billy Coleman learns about the faithfulness of God from his grandpa (James Whitmore). Billy’s dream is to own hunting dogs and resorts to prayer. Feeling his prayers are unanswered, Billy asks Grandpa for advice. Grandpa explains that God could have given Billy hunting dogs, but his character would not be strengthened. Therefore, Billy begins working at every job possible to earn money for the hunting dogs. Billy preserves through discouragement, difficulty and hardship. He earns enough money to buy two Redbone Hound puppies. Through triumph and tragedy, God uses the uses good and the bad to mold and mature Billy.

One cannot overlook the movie’s powerful affirmation of God and His salvation, which is simply told and easily understood. WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS is quality entertainment that supports biblical values.
