RETURN OF THE JEDI

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

The third in the STAR WARS trilogy RETURN OF THE JEDI is the best constructed of the three episodes. It contains some New Age teachings about the Force, but this time, these elements serve the action plotline, which has the ultimate redemptive theme of the son willing to lay down his life to save the sinner, in this case, his father. The movie opens with Luke Skywalker rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hut. Next, Luke goes to attend Yoda’s death, and Yoda reveals that Leia is Luke’s sister. Finally, Luke goes to confront his father with the understanding that only love can turn his father from the dark side of the Force.

Luke’s desire to do the right thing and the fact that love triumphs in the end gives this movie a potent emotional pull. There is no language nor sex. The writing is brilliant. The technical quality of the film has been enhanced. The sound is awesome; the vistas and panoramas are breathtaking; and, the alien characters are more than real. This is a masterpiece of filmmaking which has been made even better in its re-release. Children need to be advised that the Force is a malevolent concept. The good news is that Jesus Christ delivers us from any force, no matter how malevolent

Content:

(Pa, VV, N, A, D, M) Pagan worldview with New Age teachings as well as some biblical elements; no foul language; lots of action violence, but none of it gory though there are some frightening scenes with frightening creatures; some skimpy outfits; drinking; drug use; and, a statement that truth is relative

More Detail:

The mega success of the STAR WARS trilogy reissue may deliver more than a billion dollars in new revenue in George Lucas’ account. The third, RETURN OF THE JEDI, is the best constructed of this exciting trilogy. It contains some of the New Age teachings which disturbed people about the second part of the trilogy, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, but, this time, these elements serve the action plotline which has the ultimate redemptive theme of the son willing to lay down his life to save the sinner, in this case, his father. However, this theme is subservient to the moral that it is love, not Jesus Christ, which determines whether one is saved from the forces of darkness or not.

The movie opens with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) going back to his home planet to save Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from the malevolent Jabba the Hut. Luke is close to being a Jedi knight and so he now thinks before he acts. Thus, he places R2D2, C3PO, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), and Leia (Carrie Fisher), one at a time, in the heart of Jabba’s motley court, so that they are ready to strike when Luke makes his appearance. When Luke does arrive, Jabba doesn’t take Luke seriously, but we all know that this group of misfits and rebels will succeed against the nefarious blob of blubber.

Next, Luke goes to attend Yoda’s death, and Yoda reveals that Leia is Luke’s sister.

Finally, Luke goes to confront his father, Darth Vadar, with the understanding that only love can turn his father from the dark side of the Force. By focusing on Luke’s desire to find the good that is left in his father and on the willingness of all the good guys to lay down their lives for each other, this movie pulls at all the right heartstrings. Although some of the characters are scary, they are clearly finite in their abilities, and so they can be defeated. The fact that love triumphs in the end gives this final episode a potent emotional undertone.

There is no language nor sex in this movie, which further proves that these elements are not needed to make lots of money. The writing is brilliant. Children need to be advised that the Force, ultimately, is a malevolent concept, and, in a way, the movie even shows that fact. The good news is that Jesus Christ delivers us from any force, no matter how malevolent. However, here, the good news is that Luke is willing to sacrifice himself for others.

The technical quality of the film has been enhanced. The sound is awesome; the vistas and panoramas are breathtaking; and, the alien characters are more than real.

This is a masterpiece of film making which has been made even better in its re-release. With a little discernment, older children can be taught to beware of the Force, but enjoy this mythic yarn about THE RETURN OF THE JEDI.
