Rather than expose your children to fear and demonic influences on Halloween, why not introduce them to wonderful Christian holidays that occur at the same time, like Reformation Day or All Saints’ Day?
Here is a list of some of the best movies that you can watch this fall instead of Halloween horror:
LUTHER
The movie LUTHER covers the early years of Martin Luther’s life, from his days as a monk in the early 1500s to the proclamation of the Augsburg Confession in 1530, which founded the Lutheran Church in Germany. It is a wonderful, entertaining historical drama that, despite some flaws, shows how one man’s faith in God changed the history of the world.

QUO VADIS
QUO VADIS is an epic presentation of the conflict between the paganism of Nero’s Rome and early Christianity, in a story involving a Roman general who falls in love with a Christian woman. This profound story of Christian martyrs is one of the all-time great epics, but it does contain carefully presented images of Christians being killed for sport in Nero’s Coliseum and thus needs a slight caution for young children.

THE ROBE
THE ROBE, the first movie released in CinemaScope, is a Biblical epic focusing on the Roman tribune put in charge of carrying out the crucifixion of Jesus. This powerful, redemptive story is similar to that of Paul who at first sought to persecute Christians but then became one.

In this Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Eric Liddell is a Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of Jesus in the 1924 Olympic games and who believes that Christ is his trainer.

PILGRIM’S PROGRESS tells the story of Christian, who is an archetype of every Christian who perseveres in his faith until he enters the kingdom of heaven. This is a well-made adaptation of the classic book by John Bunyan with excellent production values and a very strong Christian worldview.

ST. PATRICK: THE IRISH LEGEND presents the larger than life story of St. Patrick in a very humane and intelligent fashion without losing the power of God operating in his life. The greatness of this production is the character of St. Patrick, whose relationship with God is shown to be extremely vibrant and real.

BEN-HUR
BEN HUR ranks among the most honored of films, taking 11 of 12 Academy awards. This beautifully crafted film begins with the birth of Christ and demonstrates a journey of faith of one man, Judah Ben-Hur, who goes from prince to prisoner to champion charioteer to Christian. This is a film that every family should see and cherish as a defender of faith and Christian values.

I AM PATRICK: PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND is a docudrama that unpacks Saint Patrick’s life according to historical experts and his famous letter the “Confessio.” I AM PATRICK has a very strong Christian, biblical worldview and stresses the value of evangelism, ministry, confession, prayer, and trusting in God.

SOPHIE SCHOLL – THE FINAL DAYS is a marvelous German movie about a young woman who challenges Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist regime in 1943. SOPHIE SCHOLL is a tremendously compelling foreign film about a very strong Christian confronting human evil.

PRAY: THE STORY OF PATRICK PEYTON is a powerful documentary about the value of family prayer, a passion of Irish native Patrick Peyton, who enlists the help of Hollywood celebrities to spread his message of hope through family prayer. PRAY has a strong Christian, biblical worldview stressing Jesus Christ and His Gospel, with little objectionable content.

SAINTS AND SOLDIERS
SAINTS AND SOLDIERS is a low-budget war movie about a supposedly true life event that occurred during World War II. The movie has many virtues, including a redemptive theme overall, but the storyline is weak and there is some questionable theological and moral content and battlefield violence.
