Netflix Promises Quality Movies in 2025. Will Streamer Follow Through?

By Movieguide® Contributor

Netflix has decided to choose quality over quantity as it strategizes for 2025.

Dan Lin, Netflix film chairman, shared the streaming giant’s new strategy to spend less money on better content.

“Lin has told business partners that the push for quality starts with developing more projects in-house and being more selective,” Bloomberg reported. “Netflix will make fewer movies and prioritize certain genres. It won’t overspend just to be in business with big stars. Put less charitably, Lin wants to make better movies by making fewer and spending less.”

Netflix announced its quality-over-quantity strategy last year.

“Right now, we’re not trying to hit a set number of film releases. It’s about ‘Let’s make what we believe in,’” Scott Stuber, then head of Netflix’s film division, explained in 2023. “And let’s actually put forth a slate that we can stand behind and say, ‘This is the best version of a romantic comedy. This is the best version of a thriller. This is the best version of a drama.’”

The company aims to release 25-30 movies a year, down from its current average of about 50 per year. This still puts the company far above any other streamer for the number of original films released.

“Most of those will be original ideas and cost less than $100 million. They will span multiple genres, encompassing movies released by a major studio like Warner Bros. and an indie like A24,” Bloomberg said.

In addition to the changes, Lin has cut staff and delegated certain staff members over specific genres. Niija Kuykendall with head up faith-based entertainment and holiday projects, Ori Marmur will oversee sci-fi and action and Kira Goldberg will focus on dramas and thrillers.

The number of films Netflix previously rolled out was not sustainable nor did it offer a budget for optimal quality. The company hopes that this new change will keep viewers entertained. If the streamer really wants to succeed, Netflix should focus on creating quality, morally uplifting and family-friendly movies, as Movieguide®’s 2023 Report to the Entertainment Industry explains.

Higher-quality movies aren’t the only change coming to Netflix in 2025.

“Netflix will open two new gigantic shopping, entertainment and dining complexes, called ‘Netflix Houses,’ in Dallas and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in 2025. They’ll “feature a wide array of shopping outlets, eateries and experiential activities tied to the streamer’s major franchises like ‘Bridgerton,’ ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Squid Game,’” reported Variety on Tuesday. Pennsylvania’s Netflix House will occupy a former department store near Philadelphia. Texas’s will be added to the Dallas Galleria mall. Each complex will span more than 100,000 sq ft.”
