What You Need To Know:
Once the family decides to fight back against the aliens, DARK SIDES ramps up the tension pretty well. However, the whole story implodes when the ending doesn’t resolve anything. In fact, the movie actually ends on a cliffhanger. The worst thing about the movie is a smarmy subplot involving two adolescent boys watching a porn movie. That subplot, some disturbingly violent nightmares, and the movie’s cliffhanger ending will turn media-wise viewers away from these DARK SKIES.

(PaPaPa, B, LL, VV, S, N, A, DD, MM) Very strong pagan worldview with demonic aliens who seem able to manipulate reality and dreams as well as people, with a moral element that’s pro-family but undercut by a cliffhanger ending; 13 obscenities (including one “f” word), three strong profanities, and three light profanities; strong scary violence includes woman lies in a pool of blood, and it’s implied husband shoots himself but it’s not real, woman suddenly bangs her head against a sliding window door, and she later has a reddened bruise on her hairline, scary aliens appear behind people, and the people don’t know they’re there, many birds starts flying into house, and house is surrounded by their dead little bodies, man starts hitting teenage boy when he thinks boy hurt his son, and boy’s father punches man, man fires shotgun at aliens, boys have marks on their bodies from aliens, teenage boy shoots younger friend with plastic pellets from toy gun and chases him through woods; two boys watch man in porn movie on TV put his hand on woman’s blouse over her breast and adolescent boy does same to girl later, but she angrily removes his hand, girl then kisses boy, boys hear sounds of moaning while watching porn movie, implied married sex, and teenage boy makes a couple suggestive comments to his younger friend; upper male nudity at pool; alcohol use; no tobacco but boys bring bag of marijuana to meeting with two girls, but they aren’t shown smoking it; and, aliens kidnap children, man lies to wife about a job he’s seeking but doesn’t get, boy lies to parents about what he’s doing, boy gets into house his realtor mother is showing to people but without her knowledge.

Bad endings can destroy a movie, and that’s pretty much what happens to the horror movie DARK SKIES. A smarmy subplot doesn’t help matters.
The story is another horror tale about a family haunted by dark forces invading their home. Lacy and Daniel Barret begin experiencing strange events in their home. First, someone wrecks their refrigerator during the night. Then, their youngest son, Sammy, is found wandering outside after Lacy sees a dark figure in his room. At the same time, all their family photos go missing. When they ask Sammy about the incidents, he mentions a scary bogeyman named the Sandman, introduced to him by his older brother, Jesse.
Then, three flocks of birds attack the house one day. Also, Lacy experiences her own blackout experience.
Lacy tries to connect the incidents by researching such events on the Internet. She discovers that one of the theories is that demonic aliens are the culprits. She wants to go talk to a local expert about it, but her husband, Daniel, resists.
Everything comes to a head when bruises and marks show up on their children’s bodies. Daniel decides they need to know more about the alien theory.

Even so, the worst thing about the movie is a subplot involving the older son, who’s 12 or so, and an older teenage friend named Kevin. The boys are shown secretly watching a porn movie. On the TV, a man tells a woman she’s been a bad girl, and he puts his hand on her blouse over her breast. Cut to Kevin and Jesse watching the TV as moaning sounds are heard. Later, Kevin and Jesse sneak two girls into an empty house, along with some marijuana. Jesse repeats the words he heard in the movie and puts his hand on one girl’s breast. The girl angrily removes Jesse’s hand, but then realizes Jesse’s never been kissed. So, she gives Jesse his first kiss.
This smarmy subplot taints the rest of the movie, which otherwise is pro-family. That subplot, some disturbingly violent nightmares, and the movie’s cliffhanger ending will turn off media-wise viewers.
