The Most Family-Friendly Movies Earn the Most Money, Annual Movieguide® Report Shows 2010

An annual box office analysis by Movieguide® has found that the most family-friendly movies earn the most money at the box office and on home video.

The Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry by the pro-family advocacy group Movieguide® shows that the most family-friendly movies averaged about $63 million per movie in 2009 in America and Canada, but that the least family-friendly movies averaged only $27.1 million.

The study extensively analyzed the content of the Top 275 or so movies released by the major studios in Hollywood, including the major independent studios.

The study also found that movies with graphically depicted sex or very strong sexual immorality averaged less than $17.5 million per movie while movies with at least some depicted sexual nudity in one scene or more averaged only $23.8 million.

Finally, movies rated G and PG averaged $55.3 million per movie in 2009, but R rated movies averaged less than $21.2 million.

The story was even more pronounced if you examine the Top 10 and Top 20 Home Video Sales in 2009.

For example, 60% of the Top 10 Home Video Sales in 2009 were Movieguide® Award winners in 2008 or 2009, only 10% of the Top 20 contained strong or very graphic sexual content or sexual immorality, and only 5% of the Top 20 were rated R!

“The evidence is abundantly clear,” said Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and publisher of Movieguide®. “Moviegoers greatly prefer family-friendly movies.

“Most people want to see Good conquer evil, Truth triumph over falsehood, Justice prevail over injustice, and Beauty overcome ugliness,” he added. “They also would like to take their whole family, including their grandparents, to the movies more often.”

Dr. Baehr will present these and other highlights from Movieguide®’s 2010 Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry Tues., Feb. 23, at the Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala, to be held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in the heart of Beverly Hills, Calif.

At the Awards Gala, Dr. Baehr and Movieguide® will present more than 25 awards to the most family-friendly and inspiring movies, television programs, and performances in 2009.

Movieguide® has been analyzing the content of movies and comparing box office numbers since 1991.

“We have found similar results in practically all of our previous studies,” Dr. Baehr noted.
