WINTER SOLSTICE

"Family Bonds Will Survive"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

WINTER SOLSTICE is a slice-of-life drama about a family still coping with the accidental death of the mother five years ago. Jim Winters tries to be strong for his two boys, Gabe and Pete, but still clearly misses his wife. Meanwhile, Gabe wants nothing more than to get out of the New Jersey suburbs and start a new life in Florida. The younger son, Pete, is having trouble in high school. When a woman moves into the neighborhood to housesit for a friend, the anger and emotional impasse between the three males comes out.

This movie’s emotions are mostly understated, which makes for slow going at times. Even so, those of us who have ever lost a loved one, had trouble in school, or left friends and family to begin a new life (which adds up to many people, by the way) will find WINTER SOLSTICE meaningful. The cast does an excellent job of making these people real. WINTER SOLSTICE is an enjoyable drama which shows that family bonds will survive, but it not a movie that didactically promotes great moral truths or Christian insights. It also includes about 30 very strong obscenities.

Content:

(B, LLL, V, N, A, D, M) Light moral worldview shows that family bonds can survive tragedy and differences in a story about a man and his two emotionally estranged sons still coping with his wife’s accidental death; 32 mostly strong obscenities and two light profanities; light violence includes brothers wrestle over TV remote and fighting when angry teenager attacks another teenager who “stole” his girlfriend; no sex; naturalistic nudity includes upper male nudity during swimming; alcohol use includes brief apparent teenage drinking of beer; smoking; and, some miscellaneous moral and spiritual problems, such as jealousy and children rebel in different ways.

More Detail:

WINTER SOLSTICE is a slice-of-life drama about a family still coping with the accidental death of the mother five years ago.

Anthony LaPaglia of TV’s WITHOUT A TRACE and numerous other movies, plays Jim Winters, who’s busy running a small landscaping business. Jim tries to be strong for his two boys, Gabe and Pete, but still clearly misses his wife. Meanwhile, Gabe wants nothing more than to get out of the New Jersey suburbs and start a new life in Florida, even if that means leaving behind his family and girlfriend. The younger son, Pete, is having trouble in high school and has to go to summer school. Pete appears to lack direction.

When a woman moves into the neighborhood to housesit for a friend, it brings out the anger and regret between the three Winters men. Slowly, they decide that it’s time to leave the darkness behind and get on with their lives.

The events and emotions in WINTER SOLSTICE are mostly understated, which makes for slow going at times. Even so, those of us who have ever lost a loved one, had trouble in school, argued with their family members, or left friends and family home to begin a new life hundreds of miles away (which adds up to most people, by the way) will find WINTER SOLSTICE a meaningful experience. In fact, the more one thinks about the story, the more meaningful it seems to become.

Despite their problems and differences, and their grief, the family bonds between Jim and his sons survive. The cast does an excellent job of creating their characters and making these issues and family bonds seem real.

WINTER SOLSTICE is not a movie that explicitly or didactically promotes great moral truths. Nor is there any explicit Christian content in it. It’s just a nice little, enjoyable family drama, about life in America that also contains universal themes to which many people may relate. Regrettably, however, the movie contains many strong obscenities that will keep a wide audience from discovering its quiet pleasures.
