What You Need To Know:
THE DYING GAUL is an independent homosexual movie starring three acclaimed character actors. Campbell Scott plays a pragmatic Hollywood producer, Jeffrey, who convinces Peter Sarsgaard's homosexual screenwriter, Robert, to make an important change to his homosexual script for one million dollars, to make it more commercial. Jeffrey throws another enticement to Robert – homosexual sex. Jeffrey introduces his own wife, Elaine (played by Patricia Clarkson), to Robert, but Elaine knows nothing about their homosexual affair. Elaine instantly likes Robert, but finds out about the affair. Crushed, Elaine strikes back at Robert, a decision that leads to murder and death.
THE DYING GAUL can be seen as a morality tale about the personal destruction that homosexuality engenders. MOVIEGUIDE® doesn't think, however, that the filmmakers realize the anti-homosexual implications of their movie. The movie seems to reflect a humanist, misanthropic view of humanity that warns people about the dangers that occur when they let their emotions and their sense of moral outrage get out of control. (H, HoHoHo, PCPC, ACap, AP, O, LLL, VV, SSS, NN, A, D, MM) Misanthropic humanist worldview about a homosexual and adulterous affair in Hollywood that leads to murder and death, with very strong homosexual content, and characters express some politically correct sentiments about homosexuality and AIDS, including Hollywood producer's mercenary, capitalist approach to the subject appears to be condemned, but movie also seems to condemn heterosexual and homosexual prejudice against people who want to be bi-sexual, especially in scene where bi-sexual man complains to his homosexual lover that both heterosexuals and homosexuals always seem biased against bi-sexuals who apparently want to have two lovers at the same time, as well as anti-American sentiment when man says, "Most Americans hate gay people" as if being opposed to homosexuality means that you "hate" all people who engage in such acts, and false occult element where woman pretends to be the spirit of a dead person on the Internet; 23 obscenities, three strong profanities, 10 light profanities, character says "Please, God" a couple times but it appears not to mean much of anything, and crude discussion about sex and homosexuality; depicted euthanasia with hospital tube, man eats poison but spits it out, man secretly gives poison to another character, and report of deadly traffic accident; married man propositions and has homosexual affair with another man, depicted sodomy, depicted masturbation, depicted intercourse between married couple, and other explicit references to sex, including homosexual chat rooms on the Internet; upper and rear male nudity and obscured female nudity; alcohol use; smoking; and, homosexual man is estranged from his ex-wife, lying, cheating, bribery, sexual harassment of married bi-sexual toward homosexual, betrayal, and woman plays cruel joke on homosexual who's having an affair with her husband, pretending on the Internet to be his dead homosexual lover.

THE DYING GAUL is an independent homosexual movie starring three acclaimed character actors, Campbell Scott, Peter Sarsgaard and Patricia Clarkson.
Scott plays a pragmatic Hollywood producer, Jeffrey, who convinces Sarsgaard’s homosexual screenwriter, Robert, to rewrite Robert’s script “The Dying Gaul,” so that the character based on Robert’s homosexual lover afflicted with AIDS will be a female rather than a male. In exchange for this, Jeffrey will pay Robert one million dollars. Jeffrey argues that, by making the character female, Robert’s message will reach a bigger audience.
Robert justifies this bribe to himself because he needs to make alimony payments to his ex-wife and their son, whom he left for his dead male lover, Maurice. Jeffrey throws another enticement to Robert: homosexual sex.
Jeffrey introduces his own wife, Elaine (played by Clarkson), to Robert, but Elaine knows nothing about their homosexual affair. Elaine takes an instant liking to Robert. She’s drawn by his talent and his pain. Robert confides to her that he takes solace in the world of homosexual chat rooms on the Internet. In an effort to know him better, Elaine anonymously meets Robert in his favorite chat room, but Robert unknowingly reveals his affair with her husband. Crushed, Elaine strikes back at Robert, a decision that leads to murder and death.
The title of this movie refers to a famous Roman sculpture of a drying French soldier that supposedly depicts the horrors and senselessness of war.
In one sense, THE DYING GAUL can be seen as a morality tale about the broken lives and personal destruction that homosexuality leaves in society. MOVIEGUIDE® doesn’t think, however, that the filmmakers realize the anti-homosexual, biblical implications of their movie. This can be seen by the statements made by the writer and director, Craig Lucas, about his movie, which is based on a play he wrote.
“Other plays and movies had led audiences to expect someone who is grieving over a loss to AIDS to always behave nobly,” Lucas says in the movie’s production notes, “whereas, of course, suffering breeds more injustice and cruelty.”
Thus, the movie seems to reflect a humanist, misanthropic view of humanity that warns people about the dangers that occur when they let their emotions and their sense of moral outrage get out of control. As such, the movie never shies away from depicting the raw sexuality occurring between these three characters. Thus, the movie contains many explicit sexual elements, including crude dialogue and written discussions about sexual perversion and explicit sex scenes.
Ultimately, THE DYING GAUL is a nasty, abhorrent piece of work.
