The problem with THE MARINE is that, every few minutes, Cena is required to dive out of something that explodes. In this movie, if you shoot anything, it blows up like the Death Star in STAR WARS. THE MARINE is a classic Hollywood, good vs. very evil movie where no amount of violence seems unjustified because the bad guys deserve whatever can be dished out. If THE MARINE were a bit more believable, the suspense would have been greater. MOVIEGUIDE® recommends extreme caution due to plenty of foul language, the meanness of the villains and almost constant violence.

(B, Ho, LLL, VVV, S, NN, A, M) Light moral worldview with good combating evil and man tries to rescue his wife, plus a few light jokes about homosexuality; about 28 obscenities (including one "f" word), two strong profanities and three light profanities; very strong action violence includes Iraqi militants torture and threaten execution of Marines, Iraqi militants get blown to bits, explosions, man threatens woman and picks fight with security guard, man gets tossed through glass storefront, thieves threaten lives of jewelry store customers; thieves kill police and blow up their car, wild car chase, character used as human shield is riddled with bullets, man strangled with chain, thieves kill more policemen and take woman hostage, man shot then eaten by alligator, men engage in fights several times, woman shoots truck driver and takes truck, and cars and buildings blow up; some sexual references, including kissing, scene in bar with implied stripper dressed in skimpy outfit, woman kisses man driving while she straddles his lap, female criminal unzips dress in front of man but nothing shown, and a few light homosexual jokes; husband and wife embrace while dressed only in underwear, female cleavage and stripper in bar wears g-string; brief alcohol use; no smoking; and, lying, kidnapping, robbery all condemned and punished.

THE MARINE is an action adventure thriller in the tradition of RAMBO. John Cena plays John Triton, a loyal Marine discharged for disobeying orders and going in to save three friends about to be killed by Islamic head choppers in Iraq. At home, he gets fired after one day on a security job because he gets too physical with some thugs begging for a good thrashing. When he agrees to just get away for a few days with his wife (Kelly Carlson), she gets taken hostage at a gas station by some despicable jewel thieves running from the law.
The thieves do not realize that running from the law is nothing compared to running from a Marine out to rescue his wife. Cena comes across well as the likeable guy you don’t want to anger. The villains in the story led by Rome (Robert Patrick) are so nasty they keep wanting to kill each other and just can’t keep themselves from killing policemen.
The problem with THE MARINE is that every few minutes Cena is required to dive out of something that explodes: a gas station, a car, a truck, a bar, a building, a wastebasket (just kidding on that last one). . . you name it and someone can blow it up so spectacularly that the entire wide screen fills with flames and a silhouette of John Cena diving to safety. In this movie, if you shoot anything, it blows up like the Death Star in STAR WARS.
THE MARINE is a classic Hollywood, good vs. very evil movie where no amount of violence seems unjustified because the bad guys deserve whatever can be dished out. The problem with such scripts is that they sometimes go overboard in order to justify a fight or explosion at rapid enough intervals. THE MARINE is one of those.
