AUTO FOCUS begins with real-life actor Bob Crane’s radio show in the 1950’s. The rest of this self-narrated story details the secret sexual life of actor Bob Crane. It is filled with revelations of the inner workings of a man deceived and living in the fantasy of the idealized self. He becomes popular and does not have the character to support that popularity. From his first foray into a strip club and his first drink, the audience is privy to the frightening downward spiral of a self-proclaimed “good son” and “likeable guy.” The movie concludes with his murder in Arizona, presumably by his best friend and partner in perversion, John Carpenter.
There is a crucial scene in AUTO FOCUS where Crane meets with a priest and talks about his newfound delight and moral confusion in infidelity and sexual wandering. The priest is pious but powerless and his offer of going to the confessional is presented as a fool’s hope. Thus, AUTO FOCUS approaches its disgusting subject with a strong humanist worldview. The disturbing reality is that Bob Crane did what felt good and in so doing destroyed two marriages, three children and hundreds of women’s lives.

AUTO FOCUS is a movie about the secret sexual life of actor Bob Crane, of TV’s HOGAN’S HEROES, a 1960s sitcom. It stars Greg Kinnear as the self-proclaimed “good son” and “likeable guy.”
This movie is a 110 minute nightmare tale of the seduction of a man into sexual sin: from simple pornography usage into adultery, then perversion, then complete mental and spiritual bondage. AUTO FOCUS details Bob Crane’s life as a self-narrative. All along putting forth the idea he held that “sex is normal, it’s people who have these hang-ups!”
AUTO FOCUS would be a great warning about the seductive nature of pornography and sexual sin if it weren’t so perverse and grotesque in its presentation of Crane’s sexual exploits! This reviewer could not decide if the filmmakers wanted me to be titillated or grossed out! They did succeed in disgusting me!
There is a scene where the key character meets with a priest in a restaurant and tries to talk about his newfound delight and moral confusion in infidelity and sexual wandering. The priest is portrayed as pious but powerless and his offer of going to the confessional is presented as a fool’s hope.
Even a person who has not experienced the conscience enlivening power of Jesus in their life would find this film disturbing. It hits at the very core of humanism’s flaw . . . if it feels good, do it! The disturbing reality is that Bob Crane did what felt good and in so doing destroyed two marriages, three children and hundreds of women’s lives. Ultimately, his sexual wanderings brought about his own death via murder by, the producers imply, his best friend.
This film was given four stars by a major newspaper in Southern California, and this reviewer can see how that could happen . . . in the same way one could say a murder was beautifully carried out! But, to laud the murder as a good thing or having intrinsic value is a scandal and a perversion.
AUTO FOCUS is a definite ‘must not see’ due to its extreme sinful sexuality and perversion. Also for its completely twisted worldview and portrayal of humans as sexually driven animals just looking for the next opportunity to practice breeding! There is absolutely no redeeming value in this movie.
