More Detail:

The Walt Disney live-action rendition of RUDYARD KIPLING’S THE JUNGLE BOOK opens on an ancient map of India, as Major Brydon (Sam Neill) tells about traveling to a remote area of this exotic subcontinent. His entourage includes his 5 year-old daughter, Kitty, and her Indian friend, Mowgli. Both Kitty and Mowgli lost their mothers to untimely deaths. When the tiger Shere Khan attacks the camp, Mowgli is carried off into the jungle. There, Mowgli is befriended by a panther, a gray wolf and a bear. Years later, a grown-up Kitty wanders into the jungle and meets Mowgli (Jason Scott Lee). Soon thereafter, Mowgli sneaks into the city to find Kitty and is thrown in prison. Kitty appeals to her father to let her teach Mowgli English. Kitty’s fianc‚, Captain William Boone, realizes that Mowgli knows the way to a lost treasure and wants Mowgli to lead him to it. When Mowgli flees to the jungle, Captain Boone pursues him in his greedy quest for the lost treasure.

RUDYARD KIPLING’S THE JUNGLE BOOK is a classic romance which has hint of a pantheistic respect for the wildlife. However, its deviations from a biblical perspective are kept in abeyance by the triumph of purity and love over avarice and pride. The movie is not for little children because of the frightening battles, but for children 8 and up, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an entertaining movie well worth seeing.
