THE CONJURING

"Overcome the Devil with Prayer and the Bible"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

THE CONJURING is a horror thriller about a Catholic couple investigating a case of demonic possession. The Warrens are asked by Caroline Perron to examine her rural house because of unexplainable incidents terrifying her young daughters. Strange noises are heard, the clocks stop at 3:07 a.m. each night, and things are broken or missing. Also, freak accidents happen whenever the parents explore the house and its history. The Warrens soon believe the Perron house is oppressed by demons. They get to work evicting them. An onslaught of terrifying demonic attacks begins.

THE CONJURING is a powerful horror thriller based on a true story. Even better, it makes its Christian lead characters unabashed heroes and forcefully presents a Christian worldview. The movie is truly scary, however, so strong caution is advised. That said, the Christian heroes rely on the Bible and prayer to defeat demonic evil. Also, a quote from Mr. Warren at the end says the destiny of each person and the whole world depends on whether we choose to serve God or the Devil. Despite its scares, THE CONJURING is strongly redemptive.

Content:

(CCC, BBB, OO, L, VV, M) Very strong Christian, moral worldview with strong occult, demonic activity, but the occult evil is defeated by the two courageous Christian heroes in the movie and the Christian heroes rely on the Bible and prayer to defeat the evil demonic forces, witchcraft is seen as evil, and quote at the end says that the destiny of each person and the whole world depends on whether you choose to serve God or the Devil; several “h” and “d” words, and one line where the Christian heroes ask God to damn the demons to Hell; strong scary and intense, but not gory, violence (it’s more psychological than graphic) includes two young girls placed in fear and peril by demons, one of the afflicted family’s two young daughters wakes up screaming that something unseen grabbed her feet night after night and finally it is shown that she is indeed dragged across her bed by unseen forces, mother is chased through a dark basement and up rickety stairs by an unseen but frightening presence that topples objects, knocks out the lights and slams the door locked on her in the dark, hiding demon jumps on girl, and she fights frantically while screaming, father knocked off a high staircase onto basement floor and he breaks a bone, scary music, mysterious clapping noises are heard, ghostly hands are seen clapping, and female demon fighter sees the vision of a woman hanging from a tree; no sex; no nudity; no alcohol; no smoking or drugs; and, married couple admits they don’t go to church, but man tells them maybe they should start going, and there’s a plot about an evil curse.

More Detail:

THE CONJURING is a powerful horror thriller based on the allegedly true story of the worst case in the career of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens were a married Roman Catholic couple who were the Catholic Church’s strongest layperson anti-demon experts. THE CONJURING is undeniably frightening but makes its Christian lead characters unabashed heroes and forcefully presents a Christian worldview in which God must defeat the Devil every time the Devil is conjured.

The Warrens (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are asked by Caroline Perron to come examine her rural house because of unexplainable incidents terrifying her young daughters. Strange noises are heard at all hours of the night, the clocks in the house stop at 3:07 a.m. each night, and things are being broken or going missing in their house. In addition, freak accidents happen whenever the parents explore the house and its history a bit too strongly.

The Warrens soon believe that the Perron house is indeed oppressed by demons. They get to work immediately since no actual priests are immediately available in the area to perform exorcisms. An onslaught of terrifying attacks by the demons begins. However, the attacks are all done bloodlessly, without sexual perversion or much improper language, yet still impressively frightening. Along the way, the Warrens are shown to be steadfast believers and great courage. A strong message of taking one’s faith seriously is also delivered when the Perrons tell the Warrens they’re not churchgoers, and Ed Warren replies, “Maybe you should start.” This truthful yet humorous line met with rabid applause and positive laughs from the mainstream audience at the screening MOVIEGUIDE® attended, which underscores the positive value THE CONJURING could have in the culture.

Strangely, the MPAA official ratings board has given THE CONJURING an R rating despite its having almost no R-rated objectionable content, foul language, or immorality. It was given the rating simply because of how scary it is! Will this be a precedent for the future? Who knows? However, the ratings board has admitted that there was no specifically R-rated content, just an overall feeling of fear and dread that was intense enough to give THE CONJURING an R. It does seem suspicious that a horror movie with an overtly Christian message is labeled with a harsher rating than many horror movies without a positive Christian worldview.

At any rate, THE CONJURING is truly scary, so strong caution is advised. However, older teenagers and adults who enjoy a good jump in their seats, in addition to serious believers who might appreciate a mainstream movie daring to convey a strong Christian message, might embrace this movie. It has the daring to place a message before the end credits that quotes Ed Warren saying, “God does exist; the Devil exists.” It also says that everyone’s destiny, and that of society, depends on which side we choose to follow.
