MAN OF STEEL 2 Officially Announced! Will Batman Join the Action?

In Hall H at Comic-Con 2013, after a Warner Brothers panel that already included Sandra Bullock and a surprise appearance by Tom Cruise, one more announcement stunned the audience.

As the cast and crew of EDGE OF TOMORROW walked offstage, a mysterious paper was passed to panel host Chris Hardwick.

“Well that was supposed to be the end of Warner Brothers…” he said mysteriously. “But I’ve been given this piece of paper that just says ‘Announce Zack Snyder’.”

Already euphoric from the surprise of Tom Cruise, the crowd again erupted in frenetic applause. Zack Snyder, director of the recent MAN OF STEEL blockbuster bounded onto the stage.  The energy in the 6,500 person hall began to roll through the crowd. There could only be one announcement Mr. Snyder could be making.

He quickly got to the point. “It’s official, we are going to make another Superman.”

Snyder then called Harry Lennix (General Swanick in MAN OF STEEL) onto stage to read a snippit from the Frank Miller’s comic The Dark Knight Returns, citing it as from the only character who ever beat Superman.:

“I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come. In all your most private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you.”

After Lennix finished, a new logo flashed on screen: the Man of Steel “S” set on top of Batman’s iconic batwings logo.

As Zack Snyder and Harry Lennix left the stage under the glowing Superman-Batman logo, the audience dissolved into shouts and wild applause, whole groups of people rising – and jumping – out of their seats.

Obviously Batman has a role in the MAN OF STEEL sequel, and from this quote it may be as a nemesis to Clark Kent/Superman. As Snyder pointed out, Batman is the only nemesis to have actually beaten Superman in the comic book canon.

With Snyder having previously stated that they are trying to avoid Kryptonite as Superman’s weakness, could Batman be the logical answer to create a believable conflict in MAN OF STEEL 2?

UPDATE: Warner Brothers just released an official statement about their Batman and Superman franchises.
