What You Need To Know:
For the first 30 minutes, RIDE ALONG has a few laughs. There’s some nice chemistry between Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, who play the suitor and his would-be brother-in-law. However, the plot begins to mysteriously unravel from there, with the story becoming utterly generic and painful to watch. RIDE ALONG also has some tastelessly vulgar sexual humor and plenty of PG-13 foul language. So, extreme caution is advised.

(PaPa, B, C, LLL, VV, S, N, A, MM) Strong pagan worldview with some moral elements and character happily says, “Thank you, Jesus” at one point; 41 or so obscenities and three profanities; strong comic and action violence includes a couple big car chases with heavy destruction, a couple shootouts between cops and criminals that occur recklessly in public, a prospective rookie cop shoots two people by accident (which the movie plays for laughs because the victims are so scared about being shot again that they give up criminal information), man threatens to shoot himself in a mall; several sex jokes early about a short man’s genital size and sexual techniques, and he cohabits with his girlfriend but wants to get engaged, plus visit to a strip club with the women in skimpy underwear; no explicit nudity but strip club women wear skimpy underwear and a crazy man strips to his underwear; alcohol in background at strip club; no smoking or drugs; and, criminal behavior and discussions of it, villain runs guns, some mean pranks, kid shows disrespect for security guard, a biker spits on security guard’s show when he tries to bring order to a rowdy situation, and policemen disobey orders from their chief consistently before it’s revealed that two of them are corrupt.

RIDE ALONG is a comedy about a short but feisty security guard who wants to become a police officer and marry his live-in girlfriend, but gets taken on a ride-along for a day by her tough-cop brother, who wants to scare the boyfriend away. RIDE ALONG has a Romantic worldview and easily stands as an early candidate for one of the new year’s truly mediocre movies.
Ben is a security guard with dreams of being a real cop in Atlanta. He lives with his girlfriend, Angela, whose brother, James, is the toughest cop on the city’s police force. When Ben gets accepted to the police academy, he asks James for two things. First, he wants a recommendation for the police force. Second, he wants his blessing to marry his sister (since their parents are dead). James says he has to test Ben’s character by taking him on a daylong ride-along.
James decides to scare Ben off by asking his dispatchers to send them every crazy incident they can find for the day. He also asks his fellow cops to stage pranks for him that appear to be criminal behavior but turn out to be jokes. So, Ben and James head out together. Along the way, they start amassing clues in the case of the city’s main gun running criminal, an unseen man named Omar.
When Ben figures out James is tricking him, he resolves to be more brave, setting in motion incidents that lead to him saving the day.
This description may make RIDE ALONG sound like a pleasant enough cop comedy. For the first 30 minutes, there are a few big laughs and some nice chemistry between Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, who play Ben and James, respectively. However, the plot begins to mysteriously unravel from there, with the story becoming utterly generic and ultimately painful to watch.
Combine its utterly generic and boringly predictable final hour with some tastelessly vulgar sexual humor, and moviegoers probably will want to avoid RIDE ALONG, even if they get a free ride to the theatre.
RIDE ALONG also has a lot of PG-13 foul language and only some light morally uplifting content, so extreme caution is advised.
