2013 Was the Year That. . .

Friday’s Movieguide® Awards Celebrates TV/Movies with Faith and Values

Hollywood, Calif. – Before Hollywood gives itself a pat on the back at this year’s Oscar ceremony, the 22nd Annual Movieguide® Awards will be celebrating last year’s movies and television programs that had the most faith and values.

The Movieguide® Awards ceremony will be held tonight at the Universal Hilton Hotel, with a telecast at 2 p.m. Eastern Time March 1 on the REELZ Channel.

Among the movies being celebrated at the awards are family movies such as FROZEN, DESPICABLE ME 2, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, TURBO, THE CROODS, and GRACE UNPLUGGED, with special nods to movies for mature audiences such as 42, MAN OF STEEL, IRON MAN 3, BLACK NATIVITY, THE HOBBIT:  THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, and THE HUNGER GAMES:  CATCHING FIRE. TV programs up for awards include THE BIBLE, LAST MAN STANDING, DUCK DYNASTY, BLUE BLOODS, SECRET MILLIONAIRE, SHARK TANK, REMEMBVER SUNDAY, and CHRISTMAS IN CONWAY.

Movieguide® Founder Ted Baehr, who speaks to parents and teachers about choosing the right kind of entertainment for their children and students, said 2013 was a big year for faith and family values in the entertainment industry.

He gave a foretaste of what Movieguide®’s 22nd Annual Faith & Values Awards and Report to the Entertainment Industry will be celebrating Friday and March 1:

2013 was the year that Branch Rickey told Jackie Robinson that Jesus Christ was the strongest man who ever lived because He was strong enough to turn the other cheek in 42.

2013 was the year that THE BIBLE won the ratings and the hearts of America.

2013 was the year that Tony Stark in IRON MAN 3 talked about people going to heaven and hell, and took the villains to church.

2013 was the year that Clark Kent, aka Superman, went to church to confess in MAN OF STEEL.

2013 was the year that love and self-sacrifice became the spiritual weapons wielded against socialist tyranny in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE.

2013 was the year that Bilbo the humble Hobbit, King Thorin, and their 12 dwarf companions drive out the evil Dragon, who had seized the kingdom of the dwarves, in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG.

2013 was the year that Christian hymns lifting up Jesus Christ were sung in Old Norse in FROZEN.

2013 was the year that real Christian love triumphed in FROZEN.

2013 was the year that Mike and Sulley worked their way up the ladder of success from the mail room in MONSTERS UNIVERSITY.

2013 was the year that Tito saves the taco stand he owns with his brother, Angelo, by creating and executing a well conceived marketing plan in TURBO.

2013 was the year that Oscar Diggs, the future Wizard of Oz, confesses and cries to God for help in OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

2013 was the year that stranded astronaut Ryan Stone asks for prayer and help from God while looking at a picture of Jesus Christ carrying a child in GRAVITY.

2013 was the year that THE CROODS take a leap of faith to follow the Light.

2013 was the year that the prodigal daughter came home to her family and Jesus Christ in GRACE UNPLUGGED.

2013 was the year that a young outcast teenage boy finds salvation watching a church BLACK NATIVITY Christmas musical.

2013 was the year that Willie and Uncle Si, two members of the Robertson clan from DUCK DYNASTY, come into Mike Baxter’s store and dealt with Kyle’s depression by quoting the book of Mark and telling Kyle that Jesus was the greatest philosopher and came to give him life more abundantly in LAST MAN STANDING:  Back to School.

2013 was the year that Mike Baxter explained that the free market “only works if there’s some moral compass to it” in LAST MAN STANDING:  Shoveling Snow.

2013 was the year that Henry noted suicide is a crime and a mortal sin in BLUE BLOODS:  Bad Blood.

“2013 was also the year that explicit sex and nudity did not sell – again,” Baehr added. “2013 was also the year that foul language did not sell – again. However, it WAS the year that the Good, the True, and the Beautiful reached new heights at the box office and in the TV ratings.”
