THE LOVE PUNCH

"Kindness and Truth Succeed Where Stealing and Lying Fail"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

THE LOVE PUNCH is a funny heist comedy that doesn’t always work. Richard and Kate are a divorced couple who’ve reached a truce. They have two older children. Richard is a businessman about to retire early. He’s worked hard over the years, setting up a nice pension for himself, his ex-wife, and his co-workers, plus a nice college fund for their own children. His last day at the office, however, Richard and his co-workers discover that the man buying their company raided their pension fund, wiping out everyone’s savings. Eventually, he and Kate decide to steal a $2 million diamond the man just bought the woman he’s going to marry.

THE LOVE PUNCH has its funny moments. Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson make a funny, appealing pair as the divorced couple, as do Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie as their goofy friends. However, they are sometimes let down by uneven storytelling and directing. The plot problem is resolved by kindness rather than stealing, but THE LOVE PUNCH has slightly excessive foul language and a gratuitous sexual situation. So, extreme caution is advised.

Content:

(PaPa, BB, PC, LLL, V, S, AA, MM) Strong mixed pagan worldview with strong moral premise and elements, which involves stealing as well as holding people against their will and getting back stolen money by stealing a diamond, but the plot problem isn’t solved by stealing in the end (it’s solved by kindness, truth and justice), plus brief politically correct comments/content about the hard-working little guy being defrauded and exploited by rich people; 18 obscenities (mostly “s” or “h” words with one “f” word), four strong profanities using the name of Jesus, 10 light profanities such as “Oh, God,” and brief scatological content during one situation and its implied off-screen outcome; some light mostly comical violence with comic danger includes some pratfalls, people have to climb across ledge, van with two people in it teeters on edge of a cliff, villain slaps captured thief; no sex scenes but some light brief innuendo and implied fornication when divorced woman wakes up next to young man the next morning; no nudity; alcohol use and implied drunkenness; no smoking or illegal drugs; and, lying, people kidnapped and held by force so that would-be thieves can pose as them, attempted stealing, and computer hacking.

More Detail:

THE LOVE PUNCH is a funny heist comedy that doesn’t always work. Also, despite some positive content, there’s too much foul language and a gratuitous sexual situation.

The movie opens at a wedding. Richard and Kate are a divorced couple who’ve reached a truce of sorts, even though Kate likes to make fun of his younger girlfriend. They have two older children together, including a daughter about to start college.

Richard is a businessman about to retire early. He’s worked hard over the years, setting up a nice pension plan for himself, his ex-wife and his co-workers, plus a nice college fund for both their children. His last day at the office, however, Richard and his co-workers discover the new company that bought their company has raided their pension fund, wiping out everyone’s savings. He promises his co-workers he will get back their money somehow.

Since Kate can speak French, Richard convinces her to come to Paris with him to confront Victor Kruger, the man who stole everyone’s savings. After confronting Kruger and effectively being told, “Tough luck,” Security tosses them out of Kruger’s office.

Richard and Kate learn Kruger has just bought a $2 million diamond for his fiancée. This means Krueger robbed the pension fund to pay for the diamond. So, they decide to crash the wedding and steal the diamond. To do that, they enlist the help of their suburban neighbors and friends, Jerry and Penelope.

The question becomes, Can this motley crew accomplish such an elaborate heist? What the others don’t know is that Jerry led a rather adventurous life before he met Penelope. Will that be enough, however?

THE LOVE PUNCH has its funny moments. Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson make a funny, appealing pair as the divorced couple, as do Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie as their goofy friends. However, they are sometimes let down by the script and the directing, which aren’t as smooth and funny as they should be.

Content wise, despite this being a heist comedy where stealing is a major plot device, the plot problem isn’t solved by stealing, or lying for that matter. In fact, it perhaps can be said that kindness and doing the right thing are what win the day. Also, Richard and Kate eventually decide to get back together, and the villain’s fiancée learns what a bad guy she’s about to marry. Before that, however, Kate decides she needs to have a fling with a Frenchman she met online. Here, it’s implied that Richard cheated on her before they divorced, so the movie suggests this is a tit-for-tat situation. THE LOVE PUNCH also contains excessive foul language, though much of it is light. So, extreme caution is warranted.
