LIKE A COUNTRY SONG

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

LIKE A COUNTRY SONG has a lot going for it, including good production values and a compelling script. It tells the story of a young country singer named Jake who’s irrespon-sible, unreliable, and still angry his dad left him when he was only 9-years-old. Jake is enamored with a girl named Becka who has found Jesus, or, as she says, Jesus saved her. Jake’s mother is still angry at her husband, Jake’s father, played by Billy Ray Cyrus, who got into a car accident that killed their 5-year-old daughter, Lily, years ago. When Jake’s father comes back home after a long disappearance, everyone is pushed to their limits as they struggle to forgive.

LIKE A COUNTRY SONG has minor production flaws, but it also has many positive, faith affirming moments. It shows the freedom that forgiveness gives, not just in forgiv-ing others of their mistakes, but accepting Christ’s forgiveness of our mistakes. A beauti-ful portrayal of the Gospel, repentance and reconciliation are properly displayed. Light caution is still advised for LIKE A COUNTRY SONG, due to some minor violence and heavy drinking.

Content:

(CCC, L, V, AA, DD, M) Very strong Christian worldview with several conversions and clear Christian dialogue; two obscenities and a borderline profanity; one intense back alley beating of a country music singer, one bar fight that’s not as intense, several references to a car accident where a 5-year-old girl died; hugging and brief kissing; no nudity; lots of drinking to get drunk and several Alcoholics Anonymous meetings; no smoking but one girl discusses using drugs before she came to Jesus; and, lying but rebuked, and abandoning your children but rebuked.

More Detail:

LIKE A COUNTRY SONG has a lot going for it, including good production values and a compelling script.

It tells the story of a young country singer named Jake who’s irresponsible, unreliable and still angry his dad left him when he was only 9-years-old. Jake is enamored with a girl named Becka who has found Jesus, or, more accurately as she says, Jesus saved her. Jake’s mother is still angry her husband, Jake’s father, played by Billy Ray Cyrus, who got into a car accident that killed their 5-year-old daughter, Lily, years ago and then disappeared.

The father suddenly shows up in the neighborhood to apologize because Jesus rescued him, but he’s still hitting the bottle. When Jake finds out his father isn’t dead, he disowns his mother, alienates Becka, yells at his father, and goes on a drunken brawl. Only forgiveness can repair the damage that’s occurred by people doing things that are self-destructive and hurtful to others.

Much of LIKE A COUNTRY SONG is terrific, including some of the songs. Billy Ray Cyrus does a good job, the writing is tight, and the movie has a good pace. The cinematography is also great.

That said, there are several slow moments in the movie. The final climax comes a little early and the movie tries to make the song the climax when, in fact, it’s just the resolution. The lead actor playing Jake is often very good, but once in a while, he looks like he’s posing and forcing his emotions. Also, his makeup after the fight scene is too obtrusive. However, these technical mistakes don’t take much away from the movie’s enter-ainment value or the story’s powerful message.

LIKE A COUNTRY SONG has many positive, faith affirming moments. It shows the freedom that forgiveness gives, not just in forgiving others of their mistakes, but accepting Christ’s forgiveness of our mistakes. A beautiful portrayal of the Gospel, repentance and reconciliation are properly displayed. Light caution is still advised for LIKE A COUNTRY SONG, due to some minor violence and heavy drinking.
