Actress Leah Remini Shares About Reconnecting with Her Catholic Faith

By Rachal Marquez, Contributing Writer

Leah Remini has recently been opening up about her more than 30 years spent with the Church of Scientology, as well as what finally brought her to leave and reconnect with Catholicism. The “King of Queens” actress discusses much of this in her upcoming book, “Troublemaker:  Surviving Hollywood and Scientology.”

Remini emphasized that, since leaving Scientology, she has experienced religious freedom in a new way. Since she and her husband left the church in 2013, they have identified as Catholic.

“I was always religious. I was baptized as a Catholic. I got my daughter baptized as a Catholic,” she said in an interview with “Good Morning America” on Monday. “I’m reconnecting with my faith. It’s been a beautiful thing.”

Several celebrities, most notably Tom Cruise, belong to the Church of Scientology, and both the religion and its members have become somewhat notorious for the way they remain largely secretive and unwelcoming to outsiders.

“I decided I didn’t want to raise my daughter in the [Church of Scientology] because, from what I’ve experienced and what I saw, the church becomes your everything. It becomes your mother, your father, your everything. You are dependent on the church,” Remini said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly this last July. “I just didn’t want her to be raised that way, because let’s say in 10 years if I don’t want to be connected to the church anymore, my own daughter would be taught to disconnect from me.”

Remini said her daughter Sofia was one of the biggest reasons that she not only left Scientology, but reconnected to her Catholic faith. Sofia was baptized as Catholic earlier this year, and her father, Angel Pagan, expressed what a beautiful moment it was for the family through a post on Instagram.

“For the record @leahremini and I have always been Catholic! Why we waited so long to baptize Sofia! Hmmm …,” Angel Pagan wrote. “Anyway it was a beautiful experience and our little angel is on her way to a more spiritual existence. God Bless!”

Remini responded that she thought the fact Sofia was baptized at the age of 11, as opposed to the Catholic tradition of baptizing people as infants, was exactly what needed to happen because this way Sofia understood the significance.

“Happened at the right time. Our daughter was aware of what she was accepting,” she tweeted. “And, that was beautiful to witness.”

Remini emphasized in the GMA interview how there is a deeper message she wants people to understand:  “We really want people to know it’s never too late to start again.”
