Though told from a sympathetic liberal viewpoint, WEINER enables viewers to feel both laughter and contempt for the former Congressman as it unfolds. Meanwhile, the former Congressman’s powerful wife just looks sad and embarrassed. WEINER handles its subject as tastefully as possible and avoids making political messages along the way. That said, WEINER has a Romantic, liberal worldview mitigated slightly by some moral elements showing that the narcissistic title character is clearly brought down by his pride and sin. WEINER is a fascinating, funny documentary about the exploits of former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner, who was forced to resign after sending dirty pictures via Twitter and then tried to come back by running for New York City mayor. WEINER has a Romantic, liberal worldview mitigated slightly by some moral elements showing that the narcissistic title character is clearly brought down by his pride and sin.
WEINER shines fresh light on one of the most notorious political scandals of the past decade. Directors Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg enter the world of former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner and his high-powered wife, Huma Abedin, amid some of the hardest moments one can imagine having in marriage. Weiner was forced to resign from Congress in 2011 after he admitted texting a revealing photo of his underpants to multiple women across the country.
Even though he apologized and managed to save his marriage to Abedin, who’s most famous for being Hillary Clinton’s right-hand aide for the past 15 years, Weiner felt drawn back into the spotlight two years later by his desire to run for the position of New York City mayor. Just as he hits the top of the polls in that race, however, Weiner is busted again, for sexting photos of exposed private parts to even more women.
How he and Huma handle that second crisis and the media circus surrounding it makes WEINER a fascinating exploration of tabloid culture as well. Even more intriguingly, WEINER makes viewers feel both laughter and contempt for its subject as it unfolds. This truly is a gut-bustingly funny documentary, even as it shares a story of modern-day tragedy in showing a man’s career falling apart and a wife who is trapped having to stay with him to avoid further controversy affecting her own political career. It is also a smart reflection of today’s tabloid-driven journalism era.
There are probably many parallels between the Weiner story and that of Bill Clinton, as both men were extremely popular politicians whose careers were impacted by their sexual peccadilloes. However, their wives stand by them far more patiently than most women would. That Weiner allowed the directors so much access to his life in the first place is an example of his larger problem. That is, the narcissistic hubris that enables a person to think they can easily win the votes of thousands of strangers because they’re unstoppable.
WEINER handles its subject as tastefully as possible and avoids making political messages along the way. Even when it shows Wiener at a gay pride march, he comes across as simply attending every type of gathering he can in search of votes. It is definitely not a positive portrayal of the man overall. The movie reveals Weiner as someone whose strange, reckless and deceitful behavior brought down his career and, apparently for all intents and purposes, his marriage.
It is a fascinating and funny movie for adult viewers intrigued not only by the scandal itself, but also by the way the modern tabloid press affects our political races. The movie contains some strong foul language and scandalous subject matter, so extreme caution is advised.
