The ABC’s of Back to School: How to Manage the Media to Keep Your Children Thriving This School Year

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

“ABC… it’s easy as 1, 2, 3…”

It’s mid-August and many families are completing their back to school shopping for supplies and new clothes. Before you post any pictures of the first day back, take a look at some helpful tips to make this year the best one for your children yet!

A- Awareness: Knowing what your children are up to is important for being involved in their daily lives. To help you stay informed about movies that your children may hear about from their friends, check our reviews page for the latest movies and TV shows coming out to see if the content is appropriate or worthwhile. As your children learn in the classroom, keep in mind that they can learn just as much from media, and it’s not always good or true. As a result, being up to date on the latest movies and shows helps you stay ahead of the curve and protect your children (Matthew 18:6).

B- Bedtime: Perhaps this summer, bedtime has been a fluctuating schedule. Chances are that’s about to change as the 2018-2019 school year approaches. Did you know that the National Sleep Foundation says that turning your phone off an hour before you plan to go to sleep can help lessen anxiety? School can be enough as is, so why let technology further add to the stresses of homework, tests and college applications? Establish a screen-free bedtime zone, so that your children get a good night’s sleep.

C- Conversation: Creating a dialogue with your children is an awesome way to hear what they’re learning, both in and out of the classroom. If you have several children, we know that finding a time to chat in between soccer practice, dance rehearsal and playdates may be challenging, but we encourage you to look for windows during carpool, dinner or the weekend to stay plugged into what your children see and digest from pop culture and the school hallway. Also, bear in mind that your children won’t be kids forever. Savor these moments to talk with them to provide healthy media habits for the future (Proverbs 22:6).
