What Should I Do with My Old VHS Tapes?

The entertainment industry is making a steady shift to streaming movies and TV rather than making hard copies available for audiences. VHS tapes are no longer made, and in the future, we speculate that DVD’s and Blu-Rays will be a reminder of the things of old (but we’ll worry about that another day).
We should expect that technology will adapt, but for many of us but now we’re forced with a question: where does that leave our VHS tapes?
Here are a few ideas to get your wheels turning….
Recycle
Did you know that the outside shell of VHS tapes will never biodegrade? That’s right! To stop the pill-up in landfills, it is possible to recycle your VHS movies. One of the easiest ways to do so is to put your zip-code in Earth911.com to find the nearest center near you that takes VHS tapes.
Sell
Media collectors are willing to pay top dollar for some classic tapes. One website notes that an original VHS copy of the Disney movie ALADDIN could make you up to $1,500 and a BEAUTY OF THE BEAST Black Diamond Edition could make you $5,000!
Chances are your children who grew up with these videos are already subscribing to streaming sites. So, it might be time to do some re-vamping. Dig around on the internet to see if any private collectors are willing to buy. Just make sure you compare with other sites offers before the final sale goes through.
Upcycle
If you can’t find the heart to get rid of your VHS’s, no worries! It’s easy to disassemble the tapes’ contents making them multi-functional.
- Inside you’ll find the film that you can use as ribbon or home décor.
- If you have a living room or media room where you screen all your movies, you could even make a display case for them on the wall that showcases you’ve been a movie buff since the good ‘ole days.
But, what if my home videos are on VHS?
If this applies to you, the best thing to do would be converting your VHS’ to DVD or Blu-Ray. Stores like Costco and Walgreens offer services to convert your tapes for you!
