An Open Letter to God for 2019

An Open Letter to God for 2019

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

Dear Lord Jesus,

I come to you today thankful for Your provision throughout this year. 2018 has seen a variety of heartache and ideological confusion, but also, many miracles, celebrations and joy.

Lord, the media can be used for both good and bad. Learning to navigate these tough waters gave me a greater sense of discernment as the Holy Spirit continually prompted me seek You with urgency and stand resolved for truth. I pray this same sentiment for my fellow believers as they go to the movies, surf the internet and engage with the culture. I ask Lord that You inspire conviction in our hearts to wisdom (Prov. 1:5) about our choices and in doing so, make others around us take note of Your light in us (John 3:19, John 8:12).

This year, there’s no doubt You’ve moved in Hollywood! We’ve seen Hollywood studios release movies like I CAN ONLY IMAGINE and PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST, which have led many into a relationship with you. In addition, we’ve seen powerful testimonies of people in the industry coming to know you and speaking out about their personal relationship with You. Every single story, whether on screen, in the press, or on social media makes an impact. We pray that 2019 would be even better, with more movies that proclaim faith, more transformations in Hollywood and a deeper understanding in Hollywood and beyond – of who You are, and who You want us to be.

In a similar vein, worship music has catapulted Your Good News into the hearts of many who long for a sense of peace. Artists like Tori Kelly, Avril Lavigne and Lauren Daigle released worship music that broke through the Christian/Secular divide in the music industry, and became some of the most listened to music of the year. The words in those songs are proclaiming your constant faithfulness, and we’re so encouraged to see the impact they’re having in that medium. In 2019, please continue to work in the music industry, and bless those who are seeking to honor You, and make a positive impact on the world through their music.

As I reflect on the times of today, I cannot forget that we live in a fallen world. There are still online predators. Porn remains a billion-dollar industry. Lives are taken in the wombs of mothers. We are so attached to our digital devices that we’re losing innocence and becoming lonelier by the day. Sometimes it feels utterly hopeless to look around and see all the brokenness… When I reach these moments Lord, I ask You to remind me that Satan disguises Himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14). Help me bear in mind that for every good thing You’ve created, He will attempt to manipulate it to satisfy his plans. In 2019, we ask that You would continue to shine a light on the darkness of this world, exposing evil and also replacing it with goodness. We know that You will make all things right again, and we ask that Your Kingdom would come on earth as it is in heaven.

In 2019, I am optimistic to see Your hand continue to move in Hollywood and throughout the world. I am confident that You are using the media to accomplish Your plans! Even still, bless those in the industry with Your favor. Use believers to witness to others on movie sets, and help people to know who You are through our love. Help us to reflect Your goodness, kindness, humility and radical love to our broken and fallen world. Despite the chaotic culture of today, in 2019 help us to better transfix our eyes upon You.

As 2018 comes to a close, Christians worldwide draw together to celebrate Your birth and what that did to change the course of human history. When I think about Your humility, I am moved to tears. So, I end this prayer as I started, in gratitude. Thank You for your sacrifice, Your example and Your love. I choose to rest on this as 2019 comes, and we have faith that you’ll do wonderous things in the coming year.

In Your name I pray,

Amen.
