4 Things TOY STORY 4 Will Teach Families

It’s hard to believe that the first TOY STORY movie released over twenty years ago. Beloved characters like Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex and the gang are back with some positive lessons for the whole family.
- Every family goes through seasons of change
TOY STORY 4 picks up where the last movie left off. Woody and the gang are living with their new child owner named Bonnie. Bonnie is at the age where she must leave pre-school behind and make new friends at kindergarten, which is a huge adjustment for her. However, everyone grows up and that means change is inevitable. Parents in the audience who have children past this age might reminisce on their memories of this season. Children might be encouraged that overcoming a fear of the unknown is possible!
- Loyalty to friends and family matters
It’s no secret that Woody has a moral compass that points due North. A huge component of TOY STORY 4 centers on Woody’s heart to protect and sacrifice himself for the better of Bonnie and her toys, who are also his treasured friends. Likewise, new character Giggle McDimples and Bo Peep show commitment to their friendship with one another. Movieguide® found that this message in TOY 4 resonates with Christian and biblical principles. Consider the verse found in the gospel of John, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13 NIV).
- Quality time together makes for great memories to share
In the movie, Bonnie and her parents go on a trip to go camping before the school year begins. Most of the action takes place on this trip between the toys and the family. As summer begins and families embark on their own vacations and trips, many will appreciate that the movie reinforces the value of spending quality time together as a family. Those special moments and adventures create memories that last a lifetime.
- Marriage is relevant, even if society says it isn’t
If you feel like the biblical principle of marriage is under attack in Hollywood, prepare to be amazed. TOY STORY 4 demonstrates the value of maturing to the point of being equipped for marriage! We won’t give any spoilers away, but just know that on more than one occasion, the movie promotes that marriage is still important.
