The movie opens by introducing Nina, a cardiologist working at a busy hospital. Nina’s best friend, Olivia, also works at the hospital and is always encouraging Nina to get out more. One day, Nina is offered a promotion at the hospital, but only if she can put together an impressive nutrition class for patients to take.

A woman on the director’s board at the hospital hosts a class with Chef Dave as the instructor. Nina is volunteered to help him cook and gets a bad first impression of him. However, her boss tells her that the only way that the board will approve the class and promote Nina, is if Dave teaches it.

In order, to satisfy the board and her boss, Nina decides to take a cooking class with Dave to win him over. However, this plan backfires because Dave and Nina get on each other’s nerves. Nina develops a bad attitude in class, and this makes Dave resentful toward her. When Dave threatens to quit, Nina asks him to help her become a better chef, and he agrees to the offer. Dave and Nina learn they have a lot more in common than they originally thought, and the two begin to develop a bond.

Dave eventually agrees to help Nina cook the nutrition class at the hospital, but Dave’s ex fiancé suddenly returns, offering Dave his dream job in Seattle. This leaves Dave having to decide between his job in Seattle or his job helping Nina in Los Angeles. The story also follows Olivia and her ex-boyfriend during their on and off again relationship, as well as a story between an estranged mother and daughter after the mother falls ill.
