Movieguide® Award Nominees Top Deadline’s ‘Most Valuable Blockbuster’ Tournament

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Multiple Movieguide® Award nominees for both Best Movie for Families and Best Movie for Mature Audiences filled out the bracket in Deadline’s “Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament.”

Deadline ranked AVENGERS: ENDGAME, which raked in a $900 million profit, as the No. 1 Most Valuable Blockbuster for the 2020 tournament.

ENDGAME was also selected as one of the Best Movies for Mature Audiences by Movieguide® at the 28th Annual Movieguide® Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry.

“Marvel Studios has a long history here with Movieguide® so we couldn’t be more thrilled to be back,” Marvel Studios’ Brian Gay said at the Gala. “As I’m sure you all know in the room, it takes an entire team of incredibly talented people to bring a movie like this together. As much as we enjoy making it, we really enjoy having families watch it at home and enjoy it themselves. This Movieguide® [Award] is a symbol of that, so we thank you for this incredible honor.”

Deadline determines the “most valuable” movies beyond how much a movie grossed.

According to the entertainment site, these movies are determined through a specific process:

When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&A, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2019, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Deadline’s data proves Movieguide®’s hypothesis that family-friendly movies outperform their gratuitous counterparts in the box office, making more money as they draw more people to the theaters.

Other movies on Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster list include LION KING (2019) at No. 3, TOY STORY 4 at No. 6, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME at No. 8, and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD at No. 12. Each of these movies were also selected as some of Movieguide®’s Best Movies for Families for 2019.

Movieguide® Best Movie for Mature Audiences pick 1917 landed at No. 19 on the list, while LITTLE WOMEN took the No. 24 spot.

Other family-friendly flicks also appeared on Deadline’s list, with FROZEN 2 coming in at No. 2, and ALADDIN (2019) taking the No. 7 spot, and SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 landing at No. 14.

Though the 2020 tournament was supposed to coincide with the now cancelled March Madness basketball series, Deadline says this year’s tournament was critical as studios weigh their futures in light of the COVID-19 virus.

“With exhibition struggling to meet its monthly overhead costs and studios funneling their current theatrical releases to streaming, the tournament serves as a reminder of the financial upside of a strong theatrical release, and what its ancillary windows can rake in,” Deadline said at the launch of the tournament.
