Why The Academy Might Postpone the 2021 Oscars, According to Speculators

Though it’s still months away, the 2021 Oscars might be postponed due to COVID-related issues that affected movie releases.

The 93rd Oscars are currently scheduled for February 28, 2021. However, a source familiar with the Academy exclusively told Variety that, “It’s likely they’ll be postponed.”

As of now, cancellation or postponement plans are not determined. The matter of postponing the awards show hasn’t even been “formally discussed or formally proposed yet.”

However, the Academy has already made rule changes for the upcoming season.

One of the major rule changes states the Academy will now consider digital releases for this upcoming season.

They also added five major cities, apart from Los Angeles, where a movie must have a seven-day theatrical run in order to be considered once theaters are up and running.

When the new rules were put in place David Rubin, the Academy president, told Variety it was too early to know what the 2021 Oscars would look like because of COVID-19.

“It’s impossible to know what the landscape will be,” he said. “We know we want to celebrate film, but we do not know exactly what form it will take.”

As of now, it is unclear what the upcoming awards season will look like.

Movieguide.org will continue to post updates in the coming weeks.
