AMC Theaters Delay Opening As Release Dates Continue to Shift

AMC Theaters pushed back their opening date as more Hollywood titles pushed their release dates to August.

Moviegoers will have to wait a bit longer to see new titles at their local AMC theater, as the chain plans to open July 30 instead of July 15, according to Variety.

AMC, the largest theater chain, hopes to be fully operational by early August, opening 450 of its more than 600 theaters.

Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC, said in a statement, “We continue to devote extraordinary resources into our plan to operate our theatres with a hyper commitment to the safety and health of our guests and associates.”

Movieguide previously reported that last week, the theater chain backtracked on their no-mask policies and decided to require moviegoers to wear masks.

Regal and Cinemark followed suit and also pushed their opening dates.

Regal will now open July 31 and Cinemark is set to open July 24 with library titles. Cinemark plans to begin showing new titles on July 31.

Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi said,“Cinemark is pleased with the moviegoer response and key learnings from our initial five-theater test-and-learn phase in the Dallas area, and we look forward to welcoming movie fans back into our auditoriums across the country to enjoy this year’s newest films.”

News of AMC delaying their opening isn’t surprising as Hollywood continues to move release dates to August.

Sony’s rom-com THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY is now set to be the first major studio theatrical release since March on August 7.

Christopher Nolan’s TENET will open the following week on August 12 with Disney’s MULAN (2020) and Lionsgate’s ANTEBELLUM on August 21.

BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC hits theaters on August 28, followed by A QUIET PLACE PART II on September 4.

It’s too soon to tell if the new dates will in fact be the final resting place for these movies.
