Faith-Filled SWEET MAGNOLIAS Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

Netflix’s SWEET MAGNOLIAS is taking fans back to Serenity, South Carolina, for a season 2.

The Netflix original series is based on the novels by Sherryl Woods and features 10 episodes in the first season.

Movieguide® found positive Christian and moral elements throughout the show, but especially in episode 4, “Lay It All Down.”

According to the review,

“The program also has a compelling message that there are seasons of peaks and valleys, but how we handle ourselves in those peaks and valleys is what really defines us. “Lay It All Down” has a very strong Christian, moral worldview with an emphasis on friendship, caring for others, depicted prayer, and references to Scripture.”

The plot focuses on three Southern friends — Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen — who support each other through many of life’s trials. Faith is a major inclusion in their relationship, and church is a huge part of their culture.

The actresses who play the trio on shared the renewal news on their Instagram pages.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Maddie) said, “Each day I read all of your amazing messages and I’m truly humbled. This show has saved me in so many ways and I love that we get to continue telling our story.”

Brooke Elliot (Dana Sue) captioned a series of Instagram videos with, “THANK YOU to everyone everyone everyone who watched us and supported us and loved us!”

Heather Headley (Helen) shared an Instagram video saying, “Netflix has renewed our show for a season two. Yes, they did.”

She continued, “It’s because of you. It’s because of your love and your support for our show.”

Headley also mentioned that Netflix said they’ll start production as soon as it’s safe to go back to work due to the coronavirus restrictions.
