Amy Grant Opens Up About the Doctor Visit that Saved Her Life

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

Christian pop artist Amy Grant opened up about her heart condition diagnosis and successful heart surgery a few months back.

On GOOD MORNING AMERICA, Grant talked about the doctor visit that changed everything.

“I had an irregular heartbeat for the last 10 years, and it exhibited every day,” she explained. “It bothered me a little bit and then I’ve had a harder time singing in the last five years, everything kind of tightening up as I was trying to sing.”

She didn’t know her hard time breathing could be her heart telling her something.

“I remember a couple of times telling Vince [Gill], ‘I feel like I’m suffocating,’” she continued. “It’s the weirdest thing, I’m breathing as deep as I can, but in my mind, none of that had to do with my heart.”

When Grant and her husband Vince Gill went in for one of Gill’s routine checkups, the doctor asked how she was doing, and encouraged Grant to get some tests done.

The next day, the tests revealed Grant had a birth defect called PAPVR.

“It was a total surprise,” she said.

Movieguide® previously reported that PAPVR is “a heart defect present at birth (congenital) in which some of the pulmonary veins carrying blood from the lungs to the heart flow into other blood vessels or into the heart’s upper right chamber (right atrium), instead of correctly entering the heart’s upper left chamber (left atrium).”

The 59-year-old learned she would need surgery before she turned 60.

Grant said, “They were doing an ultrasound of my heart and the doctor came in. He said, ‘Vince, this is the kind of situation where Amy would be fine, fine, fine and then one day it would be catastrophic.’ And we don’t know when that would be, but it would have to be sooner rather than later.”

Movieguide® previously reported that the surgery, which took place in June, was successful.

“Thankfully the doctor said it could not have gone better. We’re praying for a full and easy recovery over the next days, weeks and months to come,” Grant’s rep told PEOPLE.

After the surgery, Grant said in an Instagram post that, “My recovery has honestly felt miraculous,” and that “Prayer changes everything.”

We are thankful for a full recovery!
