American rapper Sean Combs, aka Diddy, said that the pandemic helped him build relationships with his children and recognize the blessing of family.

“For me, my life got better because I was running myself into the ground and I wasn’t taking enough time for my family and for myself. It’s really been a blessing,” Diddy told legendary producer Clive Davis during the virtual Pre-Grammy Gala. “I lost the mother of my children and the time that [my kids and I] were sequestered together, it helped me to make up for all those years I was on tour and to get closer to my family.”

Diddy, 51, said that he wanted to use the time in lockdown to be a better father to his twin daughters Jessie and D’Lila, 14, and son Christian, 22, whom he shared with late partner Kim Porter. Diddy is also father to son Justin, 27, and daughter Chance, 14, from other relationships.

“For me, it’s been a blessing but really using the time to become a better father and a better person,” Diddy said.

Diddy also used the time to reignite his love for music.

“When I turned 50 … I knew something was missing and what was missing was music,” Diddy said. “I don’t have a big splashy announcement. I can just say I’m back orchestrating and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

The musician’s daughters said that Diddy instilled in them a heart of giving, and they a point to give back during the difficulties of the pandemic.

“Last year and going into this year has been difficult for so many. We know how truly blessed we are, and our parents have taught us the importance of helping others,” Chance, D’Lila, and Jessie told PEOPLE. “It’s something that we’ve made a goal for ourselves as we start to make our own decisions and find our paths as young women.”
